Station Maintenance Technician

 

 

PowerStream Inc. is the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company in Ontario, providing service to more than 355,000 customers residing or owning a business in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario. It is jointly owned by the Cities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan.

 

Purpose: Reporting to the Supervisor, Station Maintenance, this position is responsible for the installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, repairs and data gathering of substation equipment including switchgear, power transformers, capacitors and capacitor banks, circuit breakers, dc systems, etc.  The incumbent is also responsible for underground cable fault locating, cable testing, cable identification, underground switchgear repairs and distribution transformer testing, repair and modification.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1)  Safety:  Responsible for an understanding and working knowledge and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSRrules, PowerStream policies and procedures and safe work practices  that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using PowerStream procedures.

 

2)  Maintains and repairs municipal (MS) and transformer station (TS) facilities, , transformers, monitoring equipment, switches, switchgear, U.P.S. systems, dc systems, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, standby diesel generators, and other ancillary equipment.

 

3)  Performs electrical and diagnostic tests on power and distribution transformers, circuit breakers, dc systems to verify integrity of components and predict potential failures.  Maintains and updates information on Computerized Maintenance management System (CMMS) and other databases.

 

4)  Commissions and constructs new station equipment.

 

5)  Performs on-demand fault locating and proactive testing on primary cables.

 

6)  Supervises contractors to ensure work is carried out in compliance with corporate standards and safety rules and regulations.

 

7)  Performs thermo-graphic scanning on electrical equipment to identify potential problems or flaws to minimize equipment failure. 

 

8)  Liaises with external agencies such as Hydro One, equipment manufacturers, and consultants. 

 

9)  Ensures safe and efficient operation of TS’s and MS’s through periodic documented inspections, reports and effects repairs on any deficiencies utilizing the CMMS.

 

10)  Ensures all TS’s and MS’s are kept in a state of good repair and are clear from debris, weeds and clutter.

 

11)  Evaluates job sites to identify and report on risks, and hazards and implements necessary safety precautions.

 

12)  Ensures work is completed in compliance with ESA regulations as applicable to electrical distribution systems.

 

13)  Conduct tailboard conference & safety orientation with staff, contractors, and project team as required.

 

14)  Participate in training apprentices and students.

 

15)  Organize and coordinate daily work schedules as directed by Supervisor.

 

16) Completes daily timesheets and maintains current CVOR log.

 

 

Experience and Educational Requirements:

 

Experience:

  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of related  experience in the maintenance and operation of Medium and High Voltage  Station equipment.

Education and Professional Designations:

  • Requires a 2 or 3 year community college  diploma, electrical technician/technology.
  • Requires Journeyman Substation Electrician certification.
  • Must be able to obtain OACETT  certification C. Tech – Certified Engineering.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve moderately complex problems.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with coworkers and members of the public to achieve positive outcomes for the company.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of  Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual,  organizational and operational requirements.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of E&USA rules, the utility work protection code and other safety related regulations.
  • Requires a valid Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of ESA O. Reg. 22/04
  • Requires knowledge of Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
