Supervisor, Engineering Design

 

Job Purpose

Provides supervision of the Engineering Design work group activities including the design of customer subdivision developments, capital renewal projects and relocations of distribution system plant due to roadway work.  This position approves project designs to ensure technical competence and that design meets Horizon’s policies and standards. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Capital Projects design technicians and technologists.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign and coordinate the activities of staff.
  • Evaluate and coach performance, including discipline.
  • Identify staff training needs in conjunction with Learning & Development Department.
  • Maintain and implement work processes and procedures.
  • Ensure that all reporting staff has a thorough knowledge of all company policies and regulations and that they are adhered to.
  • Ensure compliance and revising departmental policies and procedures when needed and communicating changes to employees while adhering to current corporate policies.
  • Conduct attendance management meetings and annual performance reviews as required.
  • Ensure completion of engineering designs meet Horizon’s policies and standards.
  • Ensure technical competence in the design of projects.
  • Ensure design is completed with adequate lead times and within capital budget and KPI requirements.
  • Monitor project estimated vs. actual costs and reviewing variance reports with staff.
  • Monitor planning and scheduling meetings with construction to ensure that project design; job planning and construction activities are on schedule.
  • Assist in the preparation of capital and operating budgets for the design work group.
  • Assist with Third Party Attachment application permits and design reviews. 
  • Provide support to other management staff as required.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety requirements are being met.
  • Plan, organize and participate in regular Health and Safety meetings.
  • Conduct health and safety management of staff and contractors managed by engineering including safety auditing and incident investigation, including monthly inspections, ie. ergonomics review. 

Position Qualifications

  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred or Engineering Technologist with CET designation.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical distribution system design, construction methods and distribution system components and applications.
  • Certification and knowledge of the Utility Work Protection, Occupation Health and Safety Act and IHSA/EUSA  regulations that apply to distribution system design and construction.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership and/or supervisory role or successful completion of a recognized leadership or supervisory course.
  • Strong project management and analytical skills with emphasis on attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of technical specifications/standards including CSA, ESA, and Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office applications (Word & Excel).
  • Must hold and maintain a valid “G” driver’s license.
  • Strong labour relations’ skills. Demonstrated experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
