APPRENTICE POWER MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN

 

Oshawa PUC Networks Inc., a subsidiary of Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation, is the local distribution company serving more than 50,000 customers in the City of Oshawa, located 45 minutes east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. 

Reporting to the Distribution Supervisor and/or the Manager, Distribution Construction, you will enroll in and work towards completion of the 3-year Substation Electrician apprenticeship program, satisfying the competency/certification requirements both in terms of hours worked as well as a formal training program.  Progression within the classification will depend on satisfactory on-the-job performance and successful completion of mandatory training courses.  This position will be responsible for the safe construction, commissioning, repair and maintenance of underground electrical distribution systems and substations. 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

  • Installation, repair and maintenance of substation and underground distribution systems.
  • Perform primary and secondary cable fault locating, cable splicing and terminations
  • Test and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment, including: SCADA, electronic relays and computer equipment. 
  • Moderate to heavy lifting and required to work in confined spaces, such as vault rooms and maintenance chambers.
  • Operate large vehicles and equipment as related to distribution tasks.
  • Accurately complete all necessary paperwork and maintain records of equipment and material use.
  • Perform switching of energized equipment.
  • Update station control drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

To be considered for this position applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: 

  • Three-year Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma.
  • Possess (or be able to obtain) a valid DZ license with a clean abstract.
  • Must be in good health, and physically fit for year-round outdoor work, in all elements, in confined spaces and at various heights.  Will be required to pass a medical examination. 
  • Must have a high regard for personal and public safety and be committed to working diligently towards a safer workplace.
  • Proficiency (or ability to obtain) in Occupational Health and Safety legislation, safe work practices, work protection codes, and other safety policies and procedures including First Aid/CPR and WHMIS.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, maintain a positive attitude and contribute to on-going improvement of work processes and procedures.
  • Strong and effective communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Must be available to perform regular stand-by and have the ability to reach the Company’s premises within twenty minutes.
