SYSTEM CONTROL OPERATOR
OPERATIONS DIVISION
We have two openings for System Control Operators to operate the distribution system. Interested candidates must apply in writing to express their interest in the position, with a cover letter and resume, outlining their education, experience and related qualifications.
While our preference is for a qualified Journeyperson, we will also consider applications from an apprentice or person with equivalent experience and the ability to complete the MEARIE certification within prescribed timeframes. Initially, the successful candidate will work regular day shift coverage, but will be required to work on a rotating shift schedule when management determines that the incumbent’s experience level with our distribution system and operating practices is appropriate.
The System Control Operator’s duties include:
Monitor and control the operation of the distribution system and activities of field crews in work protection, switching and isolation
Review system conditions and identify remedial action required
Direct switching and work protection
During emergency conditions, direct the activities of field crews to ensure work can be done safely to restore power to customers and to isolate damage areas
Co-ordinate activities with Hydro One to ensure safe operating conditions and continuity of supply to customers
Work within the rules set out in the Transmission Connection Agreement
Respond to customer inquiries courteously and promptly
Maintain operating records, files and drawings as required
Assist in the training of new employees
Will be required to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, and be on call
Other duties as assigned
The successful candidate will have:

Successfully completed, or working towards the completion of the MEARIE Journeyperson Electrical Operator certification, with relevant work experience and the ability to complete the certification within prescribed timeframes.
Minimum grade 12 graduation, with successful completion of courses in electrical theory, AC circuits, distribution systems and electrical measurement
Two or three year community college diploma in electrical engineering technology would be an asset, or equivalent related experience
Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), Distribution Automation and Load Management would be an asset
A high degree of computer literacy, including experience with ESRI Geographic Information System (GIS), MS-Access, Word and Excel would be an asset
Working knowledge of the Electrical Utilities Safety Rules (EUSR) and the Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC)
Knowledge of generation would be an asset
Demonstrated initiative, good judgment and organizational skills with the proven ability to take responsibility and work alone and as part of a team
Class G driver’s license in good standing
