VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS

 

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Operations is a key member of the senior management team of a top tier LDC serving a large rural geography with mid-size urban towns, located in South Central Ontario. The focus and responsibilities of the position include: technical and corporate leadership, oversight of distribution network investment plans; including capital replacement, refurbishment, systems additions and enhancements to achieve maximum life cycle value, optimal capital utilization and high standards of system reliability.  The VP is also responsible for formulating and executing the distribution system’s annual operational plan by establishing the expectations in a manner that maximizes productivity and minimizes costs, maximizes the efficient use of resources, and looks for and achieves continuous improvement while ensuring the safety of workers and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The essential duties and responsibilities of the job include but are not necessarily restricted to the following: 

Electricity System

  • Meet the electricity needs of customers through the design, construction and maintenance of a reliable, safe and cost effective electricity system, within the terms of the Company’s Vision and Mission.

  • Develop and implement, revise as required, and administrate the management of the distribution system assets, their replacement, or expansion as the system needs warrant.

Corporate Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to CEO and has responsibilities to ensure compliance with the Board of Directors vision, direction and values

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises the employees in the department; responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Vehicle Operation

  • Operate company vehicles as required.

Company Policies

  • Be fully familiar with all Company policies and procedures as they relate to the position and observe same.

  • Establish policies, procedures and practices where required; recommend modifications to existing.

Safety

  • Co-ordinate Company Health and Safety program within the Operations Department.

  • Observe all Company safety standards and report unsafe conditions.

  • Recommend ways of improving the safety of the work environment.

  • Ensure work practices are in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any other applicable legislation.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all legislated and regulatory compliance matters pertaining to the responsibilities of the department are fulfilled. 

  • Remain abreast of legislated and regulatory changes; establish new or modify existing policies, procedures, and practices

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Education and/or Experience

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of utility electrical distribution systems including their design, construction and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of accounting.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, design standards or governmental regulations. 

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. 

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the Company’s Job Costing software.

  • General knowledge of the Company’s Accounting software.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Ontario drivers license to operate the class of vehicles used in the position.
