System Control Operator 

 

Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp. (WHESC) is a progressive electric distribution utility delivering electricity in a safe & reliable manner while maintaining a high quality of service to meet the needs of our 25,000+ customers within the City of Welland. 

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Utilize SCADA to monitor and control automated substation and field devices.
  • Prepare switching orders and work protection packages following the Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC).
  • Provide guidance and dispatch to field crews performing distribution system switching and/or maintenance activities.
  • Respond to distribution system disturbances in a timely manner and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Coordinate work protection requirements, outage and restoration activities with external agencies.
  • Maintain a current record of system configuration as field changes are made and/or reported.
  • Maintain system status and monitor real time performance in outage and distribution management systems.
  • Use knowledge, training and good judgement to ensure the safety of workers and the public is met at all times.
  • Work in a manner that exceeds the requirements of the company’s policies, rules, systems and procedures, the IHSA Electrical Utility Safety Rules, the UWPC, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated Regulations.
  • Perform Standby Duty on a designated schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications & Requirements: 

  • Certification as a Journeyperson Electrical Operator through MEARIE.
  • Five years of experience in an Operator role within an Ontario-based LDC Control Room Environment.
  • Certification in UWPC with demonstrated experience creating complex issued work protection packages.
  • Demonstrated experience using SCADA, OMS and DMS to manage an electrical distribution system.
  • Knowledge of applicable Health and Safety legislation including OHSA, EUSA rules, etc.
  • Ability to work safely and independently with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must maintain a valid Class G drivers’ license.
