HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

 

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the CEO, and accountable to the Presidents of each business unit, the Health and Safety Officer will provide leadership and support to the Ascent Group of Companies, including St. Thomas Energy, on H&S programs and policies, project/site monitoring and inspection, incident and accident investigations, technical training, and quality audits.  

Major Responsibilities:

  • Updates Corporate and Business Unit H&S programs and policies and keeps abreast of regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental standards and regulations

  • Leads health and safety training to ensure all staff are effectively trained and comply with policies, best practices and regulatory requirements

  • Develops, leads and manages the H&S system

  • Communicates on health, safety and environmental matters to all employees to ensure timely and accurate disbursement of information

  • Conducts safety reviews, site inspections, audits, to ensure compliance with policies and procedures

  • Investigates all cases or questions of H&S concerns and provides regular reports to management to ensure the safety of staff and company resources

  • Manages reporting and investigations related to MOL, WSIB, Bill 168

  • Actively participates as a resource to various JHSC’s

  • Accountable for the management of safety and training budgets

  • Provides expert advice and council to management and employees on all areas of health, safety and environment to ensure the best possible working atmosphere 

Skills:

  • Ability to evaluate standardized facts and data, reconcile information

  • Ability to conduct and report on safety inspections, regulatory inspections and environmental audits

  • Ability to recommend refinements or alternatives to improve processes in the organization

  • A willingness to accept responsibility and make timely and appropriate decisions

  • Advanced written, computer (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) and verbal communications to understand and influence others 

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and technical skills

  • A willingness to travel to various owned and customer sites on a routine basis across Ontario

  • Experience to implement and understand procedures or systems which are moderately complex, and the use of specialized skills, which require technical knowledge to apply

  • Ability to manage frequent non-routine contacts and communications with internal departments, external customers, suppliers, agencies or government/regulatory representatives for the purpose of providing guidance, technical instruction or advice for matters related to the company and its policies 

Education/Experience:

  • College diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent experience in a H&S role in a similar Company/Industry

  • A minimum of 5 years progressive experience in a health, safety and environmental role

  • Additional professional experience in H&S, training, WSIB reporting, accident and claims management 

Salary:

Commensurate with experience
