DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING

 

London Hydro is seeking a Director of Engineering.  Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering and Operations, and as a member of the leadership team, you will be responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and management of Design, Planning, Reliability, GIS, System Operating, Protection & Control and Substations. You will also contribute more broadly towards developing and ensuring that the goals, objectives and strategic plan of the corporation are achieved.

 

 

JOB DUTIES

 

With a goal of achieving or surpassing initiatives and targets as established in the corporation’s strategic plan, your mandate as the Director of Engineering will focus on four key areas:

 

Corporate

  • Support the Vice President, Engineering and Operations, by participating in setting corporate and division goals and targets.  Ensure corporate goals, targets, policies and legislated regulatory requirements, are being met internally and externally.

  • Ensure long-term asset sustainment plans, annual resource and business plans, budgets and finances are reasonable, defensible and in alignment with corporate strategy and objectives.

  • Liaise with industry professionals, corporate customers, city officials, industry associations, regulators and other agencies as a senior representative of the corporation.

 

Engineering and Electrical Distribution System

  • Provide decisions and direction on long term and emergency operational and engineering issues.

  • Facilitate the development and enforcement of policies and procedures for the Engineering Division, exercising sound judgment when setting policies that may impact finance, safety and reliability.

  • Promote, encourage and ensure the development, professionalism, and the health and safety of the department’s team members.

  • Develop, promote and encourage innovative solutions through up-to-date knowledge of new technologies and industry trends.

  • Leverage modern GIS, OMS, SCADA, Metering, IT and System Analysis systems to develop advanced system engineering solutions.

 

Safety

  • Ensure processes, procedures, methods, standards and information systems are developed and enforced such that the department carries out responsibilities safely and efficiently.

  • Ensure the corporation’s adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA’s Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Electrical Safety Authority regulations, London Hydro work practices, and London Hydro’s Health & Safety Management System.

 

Regulatory Compliance

  • Prepare supporting documentation and rationales for rate applications and other regulatory filings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

In addition to holding a degree in Electrical Engineering, you possess (or are eligible for) a P.Eng. designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) registration.  You offer a minimum of 10 years of progressive, managerial experience at a senior level, as well as experience in a regulated industry (preferably in the electric utility sector in engineering and operations) and liaising with senior management, customers and external agencies. You are knowledgeable in the design and operation of high-voltage overhead and underground distribution systems including substations, protection and control, SCADA, and the procedures to operate these systems.

 

This experience is complemented by:

 

  • Proven leadership ability.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience in preparing detailed reports for, and delivering presentations to, various audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to employ effective conflict resolution.

  • Strong business acumen.
