Position Details:                 Permanent Full Time (40 hrs/week)           

 

Primary Duties 

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Hydro Group, the Subforeperson, Substation Maintenance ensures adherence to safety policies and procedures and provides supervision and direction to staff and contractors working in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric distribution system, primarily substations and underground system assets such as vaults, manholes and the associated equipment therein. He/she provides direction on operation and maintenance of substation

assets and underground-based assets as well as replacement of those assets. The incumbent manages and enhances crew productivity and performance, and provides feedback to management. He/she coordinates the planned activities of the crews and liaises with other staff and City of Kingston staff to achieve results, and manages projects through to completion. 

Education, Licences/Certification and Other Qualifications Required       

    • Registered Journeyperson Substation Electrician.
    • Experience as a Subforeperson or a similar role.
    • A minimum five (5) years’ experience in electrical substation apparatus work and underground distribution in a utility environment and excellent working knowledge of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules.
    • Excellent knowledge of the safety standards required in the field, including application of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and associated regulations. Established ability to conduct and document effective safety tailboard conferences.
    • Excellent knowledge and skill at methods and procedures pertinent to the electric substation and underground distribution fieldwork.
    • Requires UWPC Certification, Confined Space Training (Entrant & Attendant), TDG Certification, WHMIS Certification,  Other pertinent related training is an asset (e.g. Protection & Control, 309A CofQ, Radial Boom Derrick (RBD) Certification, Forklift Operator Certification).
    • Proactive in developing solutions, seeking efficiencies and improvements. Communicates very effectively with field staff and management.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills, organizational skills, resourcefulness and demonstrated initiative. Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment and cope well with problems beyond your control; exercises self-restraint and is effective in dealing with challenges. 

Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment

    • A Criminal Record Check, to the satisfaction of Utilities Kingston, will be required at the successful candidate’s expense.
    • Must possess or able to obtain and maintain at minimum a valid class “D” driver’s licence with Z Endorsement for Ontario.
