HEALTH & SAFETY SPECIALIST (1 YEAR CONTRACT)

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote occupational health and safety within the organization and with external parties.
  • Assist in developing Health and Safety Management System (HSMS), including policies, procedures, standards and best practices to meet or exceed the COR standard in Ontario.
  • Perform the role of the COR internal auditor.
  • Communicate frequently with Management with potential interactions with the Executive/Board leadership to report on the status of the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) ongoing design, improvement and implementation.
  • Support activities of the Joint Health & Safety Committees, the Health and Safety Advisory Committee and the Ergonomic Committee.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable legislation, safety rules, Veridian policies and procedures and Safe Practice Guides.
  • Assist in the investigation of incidents and unsafe working conditions.
  • Assist in the analysis of incidents in order to recommend corrective and preventive measures.
  • Assist with the reporting of work-related illnesses and injury to the WSIB and the Ministry of Labour, public contact incidents to the Electrical Safety Authority as required.
  • Assistin developing, conducting and/or arranging for training for management, supervisors and workers on health and safety legislation safe work practices and skills development.
  • Assist in the monitoring, analysis, and reporting on the organization’s H & S performance, including incidents and accidents, training and participation.
  • Recommend ways to participate in the community to improve the health of workers, their families and other community members.
  • Other duties as required may be considered part of these responsibilities. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years post secondary training in health and safety, environment science.
  • 3 to 5 years relevant experience.
  • Experience with COR program (Ontario) design/ implementation required.   
  • Experience developing, implementing and monitoring HSE programs, policies, procedures and training
  • Electrical utility trade certification: Powerline technician preferred, others considered.
  • Excellent communications/interpersonal/presentation skills, both oral and written
  • Ontario G drivers’ license.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Microsoft Work, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, etc.)
