Festival Hydro is a distribution company serving 20,000 customers in the municipalities of Stratford, St. Marys, Seaforth, Hensall, Zurich, Dashwood and Brussels. We are a progressive utility looking for an incumbent that supports our ongoing commitment to customer and operational excellence.  

Currently seeking a P&C, Stations and Metering Engineer. This position reports to the Metering/Smart Grid Manager. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all metering functions are completed in accordance with Measurement Canada and other regulatory requirements and organizations
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the 230kV-27.6kV Transformer Station and Municipal Substations
  • Administer SCADA system and implement Smart Grid initiatives
  • Manage, operate and maintain Festival Hydro owned communication systems associated with metering, stations and smart grid enabled devices in a timely manner to meet internal and external time constraints
  • Responsible for the asset management of metering, stations and smart grid assets in support of the asset management plan and Distribution System Plan
  • Manage the procurement process for metering and station assets
  • Provide engineering design responsibility for protection and controls functions and settings for protective devices in the distribution system, specifically smart grid and automated switching devices and stations protective relays and other devices.
  • Aid in the high-level planning process of distribution feeders for optimization, reliability, capacity and flexibility
  • Support consultants, vendors and suppliers with respect to SCADA, Stations and Metering support
  • Liaison with Festival Hydro Inc.’s Meter Service Provider, Hydro One and the IESO for the installation of new wholesale metering points and maintenance of existing points and Transformer Station related activities
  • Provide support to the Engineering Manager and Distribution Engineer for the design of metering and protection coordination for connection or upgrade of new or existing customers
  • Research and recommend resolutions to power quality problems experienced by customers
  • Support the Customer Service Department billing functions with respect to metering
  • Participate in the annual capital and operating/maintenance budgeting processes as related to Metering, Stations and Smart Grid/Communications
  • Support the integration of metering, stations and smart grid assets with the Geographic Information System (GIS) 

Qualifications:  

Education and Experience:

  • An Engineering degree in electrical engineering accompanied with ongoing development such as self-study or attendance at technical and administrative courses, and participation in technical and professional societies
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing with the PEO (preferred), or Engineer-In-Training registered with the PEO or CET designation
  • A minimum of five years related work experience 

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

  • Related experience in a Local Distribution Company operating in Ontario
  • Experience with power system software or analytical tools, such as CYME, DESS, ETAP, Survalent (Worldview/SmartVU) is desirable
  • Relevant experience in the fields of Revenue metering, Transformer and Distribution Stations, Smart Grid technologies, Protection & Controls and Communications
  • Experience in Generation protection and control systems
  • Distribution System Code & Transmission System Code
  • IESO Market Rules
  • Ontario Electrical Code Book & Local ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) Requirements
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
  • Electrical & Utilities Safety Association’s Rule Book and guidelines
  • Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC)
  • CSA & CEA Standards regarding Electric Utilities
  • Experience in project management including estimating, cost control and project administration
  • Demonstrated technical writing ability
  • Valid Class G Drivers License in good standing
  • Ability to analyze systems and procedures accurately and logically; grasp new technical concepts quickly
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, and municipal employees, external Agencies, and external Engineering Consultants
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, analytical and time management skills
  • Self-motivated while working independently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and work with multiple projects, to prioritize work and make adjustments to priorities throughout the day
  • Demonstrated record of good work attendance
