Vice President, Engineering and Operations

 

Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation (OPUC) serves through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, over 55,000 residents and businesses in the City of Oshawa. In addition to our primary mission of delivering safe and reliable electricity, we are dedicated to growing our innovative portfolio of new business enterprises in telecom and distributed generation services. While continuously honing our core regulated electricity distribution business; we are also following a new and exciting vision of growing our competitive businesses. 

Reporting to the President and CEO, this senior executive position provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Distribution, Engineering, Metering and Operations functions, through a management team focused on providing safe, efficient and reliable power to our customers. 

As a key member of the executive team, you will partner with the CEO and Vice President, Finance and Regulatory Compliance, to promote growth, innovation and operational improvements at OPUC and assume responsibility for all aspects of engineering and operations within the company. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide leadership, direction and input into the success of the organization with an emphasis on short and long-term strategic planning.
  • Assess current asset management, planning, scheduling, preventative maintenance strategies and system monitoring and implement a best practices approach to these functions
  • Ensure the appropriate execution of operational plans to ensure achievement of strategic priorities.
  • Develop, monitor, and analyze Key Performance Indicators, annual objectives and long-term plans to ensure the organizations meets and remains on target; optimizing staff and material resources while driving continuous improvement.  
  • Overall responsibility for developing and delivering capital and operating budget and accountable for performance against the plan.
  • Lead, coach, mentor and develop direct reports through the establishment of annual performance goals and objectives.
  • Engaged by the President/CEO to provide reports and recommendations and acts as a key resource to all key stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership and direct support for regulatory proceedings such as rate applications by developing and continuously improving Oshawa Power’s Distributions System Plan. 

Key Qualifications:  

  • University Degree in Engineering with a Professional Engineering (P. Eng.) designation
  • Minimum 10 years of senior professional experience, demonstrating progressively responsible career growth
  • Experience working with and reporting to regulatory bodies and Boards of Directors
  • Strong business acumen combined with a clear understanding of the technical requirements of the electricity sector
  • Experience managing operations within a highly regulated utility environment
  • Experience leading electrical distribution, operations and engineering teams
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills; able to achieve win-win solutions
  • Proven ability to build and lead effective teams and build collaborative relationships with all stakeholders
  • Able to logically and clearly convey ideas both verbally and in writing; able to present compelling arguments/opinions with an understanding of the audience.
