MANAGER, HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

 

This position reports to the Vice President, Corporate Services with dotted line reporting to the President & CEO and the Vice President, Engineering. The Manager of Health Safety, Safety & Environment is responsible for pursuing adoption of the highest standards of workplace health and safety to support Veridian’s goal of zero accidents. The position also ensures that Veridian’s environmental management practices are in full statutory compliance.  In fulfilling these responsibilities, the incumbent in this position coordinates all health and safety systems in the Veridian group of companies, identifies hazards, assesses risks to health and safety, puts appropriate safety controls in place, and provides advice on accident prevention and occupational health to company staff.  The position directs, coordinates and manages departmental staff, and prepares and exercises control of the approved departmental budget.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Health & Safety

  • Promote occupational health and safety within the company and with external parties.
  • Routinely engage and solicit input and feedback from the President & CEO and the Vice President of Engineering.
  • Develop the company’s Health and Safety Management System (HSMS), including policies, procedures and other documentation, to achieve and maintain the Certificate of Recognition (COR) in Ontario.
  • Monitor compliance with all applicable legislation, policies, procedures, practices, and regulations, including but not limited through workplace inspections and workplace visits.
  • Develop content and present to staff at safety meetings.
  • Develop content and conduct health and safety orientations for all new staff, contractors and visitors.
  • Support the activities of, and act as a resource to, the Joint Health & Safety Committees, the Health & Safety Advisory Committee and other active committees.
  • Investigate incidents and unsafe working conditions, including analysis of the possible causes in order to recommend corrective and preventative action, identify lessons learned, and assist management, supervisors and workers in their duties related to implementing these actions and lessons.
  • Manage and coordinate all issues with respect to the following work-related events: illness, injury, WSIB and insurance claims, modified duty/return to work matters. Assist the Human Resources department with personal issues related to rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries, and satisfactory return to work.
  • Coordinate emergency and first aid procedures.
  • Conduct, coordinate and ensure that mandatory and recommended health and safety training for management, supervisors and workers are met.
  • Communicate frequently with management, with interaction with the Executive/Board leadership, to report on the status of the HSMS including but not limited to its ongoing design, improvement, implementation, and performance, through ongoing audits and reviews. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of and be up to date on information regarding health and safety related legislation, regulations, and practices.   Disseminate to staff and assist all departments with compliance.
  • Oversee the participation of all staff in health and safety matters.
  • Monitor, report, and analyze the company’s health and safety performance, including incidents and accidents, training, participation.
  • Develop annual overall and individual health and safety programs and objectives and assist in their implementation.
  • Recommend ways to participate in the community to improve the health of staff, their families and other community members. 

Environment

  • Maintain current knowledge of and be up to date on Federal and Provincial acts and regulations with respect to the purchase, storage, use, and disposal of designated hazardous substances; either directly, or indirectly through their presence in products or equipment used by the company.
  • Ensure relevant policies and procedures are in place, maintained, and followed.
  • Ensure routine oversight, audit, and inspection is done on all environmental issues, as deemed appropriate, and report regularly on compliance.
  • Recommend changes to policy and procedures to maintain compliance, or improve effectiveness.
  • Ensure that all dangerous materials are correctly handled/moved and stored in accordance with statutory obligations and standards, with the goals of reducing use, complying with the law, and protecting the environment.
  • Implement appropriate control measures to ensure that the organization is aware of and complies with all legislation in relation to the use of its plant, equipment and substances, as well as in all workplace activities. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree or 3 years Community College or equivalent in health and safety, environmental science, physical/human science, environmental studies, or related disciplines.
  • 6 to 7 years related and relevant electrical utility experience with the ability to practically apply regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
  • CSP,CRSP, CUSA, or CSSE affiliate
  • Experience with COR program (Ontario) design/ implementation required
  • Experience developing, implementing and monitoring HS&E programs, policies, procedures and training.
  • Electrical utility trade certification: Powerline technician preferred, others considered.
  • Excellent oral and written communications/interpersonal/presentation skills.
  • Ontario Class G Driver’s license.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint Outlook, etc.).
