Journeyperson or Apprentice Systems Operator

(Maximum: $40.33/hr – Fully Qualified)

Reporting to the Supervisor Systems Control, the successful applicant will be responsible for the control of the overhead and underground electrical sub-transmission and distribution systems servicing customers ranging from residential to 115 kV. Duties include but are not limited to: monitoring the system to maintain performance within established guidelines; conducting operating activities; processing requests to undertake work on the system; carrying out planned switching operations; issuing work protection; reacting to system disturbances and directing restoration operations; preparing operating records and reports; receiving requests for and providing information as necessary; manages hydro locates; dispatching Trouble Calls and other duties as required.   

The hours of work for this position are performed on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week basis and will require shift work based on a 12 hour schedule. Shifts run from 7:30am – 7:30pm. 

The successful applicant must possess the following qualifications: 

  • Must be a graduate of a two (2) year Electrical/Electronics Technician program from a recognized community college or related program.
  • Ability to work shift work.
  • Ability to work and excel in highly stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment, procedures, rules and practices.
  • Must have strong demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to follow procedures and prioritize tasks to react to system disturbances and direct restorations.
  • Skill and aptitude with SCADA, GIS, OMS, computer databases, operating systems and various business software packages.
  • Ability to perform field switching when required.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Drivers Licence. 

The Apprentice Systems Operator position involves successful completion of an 8,000 hour apprenticeship program. This program is comprised of on-the-job training and completion of each level of the MEARIE Apprenticeship Training program. Duties will become progressively greater with each phase of practical experience and formal training. Progression within the classification will depend on satisfactory performance on the job and successful completion of the MEARIE Apprenticeship Training program. The incumbent will be assigned to various shifts throughout the apprenticeship period and, with training, will be expected to operate high voltage equipment, both remotely and manually.
