About the Role

We are looking for a dynamic individual with exceptional customer service and technical skills. Working in a non-routine and very complex environment, the Lead Protection & Control Technician is accountable for the installation and maintenance of Oakville Hydro’s state-of-the-art systems that protect and control the distribution of electrical power. 

Duties include:

  • Be part of our team utilizing grid intelligence to manage our state-of-the-art distribution system with over 215 automated field devices
  • Manage P&C job sites, including ensuring a safe work environment
  • Proper management of job documentation and gathering required resources to maintain job deadlines
  • Delegate assignments within the work crew to ensure safe and timely completion of work
  • Install and maintain supervisory control systems [SCADA], substation batteries, switchgear, transformers and breaker protection relays
  • Perform necessary tasks to ensure all devices in the substations are reliable, accurate and safe (inspect, install, clean, calibrate, test, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade)
  • Install/set up/program equipment to automate devices in the field
  • Repair and maintain mobile radios
  • Install and maintain supervisory controlled motor operated line switches
  • Hands on repairs of electronic equipment and testing
  • Install and maintain equipment that allows the remote control of high voltage field switches
  • Program, develop and monitor new systems relating to database, displays and tests
  • Maintain accurate records for installation, maintenance and repair of equipment 

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technologist Diploma (specialized in Power Systems or equivalent)
  • MEARIE Trades Training – Substation
  • 2 years’ experience as a Journeyman
  • CET eligible
  • Journeyperson Substation, P&C Technician
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s Licence and an excellent driving record
  • Extensive electrical and electronic knowledge and some mechanical knowledge
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and logic diagrams
  • Skills in operating instruments and interpret instrument reading
  • Good working knowledge of personal computers including DOS, telnet, Windows 10 and PowerShell
  • Good working knowledge of Windows based software such as MS Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, Power Point, etc.
  • Good understanding and debugging skills on serial and Ethernet networks/communications
  • Basic understanding of wireless communication
  • Ability to work effectively with hand tools
  • Ability to do physical work in various outdoor conditions
  • Good verbal, listening and written communication skills
  • Strong safety awareness
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that builds relationships with both internal and external customers
  • Demonstrate ability to work well on own without supervision
  • Ability to problem solve and exercise good judgment
