Apprentice Powerline Technician

The Powerline Technician position is responsible for carrying out all aspects of the Powerline Technician trade, including the construction, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the power distribution and street lighting systems. The incumbent is responsible for safe and efficient installations that limit power outages and minimize service disruptions.

 

Applications will be considered from candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

 

  • The candidate will be registered with the MTCU as an Apprentice Powerline Technician and will have successfully completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of applicable experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed the two year Powerline Technician co-op program at Conestoga College or Cambrian College.
  • Grade 12 Secondary School Graduation Diploma plus some electrical theory courses providing an ability to perform single phase and three phase AC circuit calculations accurately.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence and will be required to upgrade to a Class ‘AZ’ within six months.
  • Must be certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Must demonstrate an ability to interpret drawings, sketches and diagrams and to work from verbal and written instructions, specifications and standards.
  • Requires a working knowledge of industry regulations, the ESA Distribution Safety Regulations, the Electrical Utility Safety Rules, the Work Protection Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related Construction and Industrial Regulations.
  • Must have some experience operating a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to perform the duties of the job including manual labour, work in underground vaults and physically able to climb poles and work at heights.
  • Must deal with fellow employees and the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

 

The successful candidate will be required to be available for emergency call-outs and occasional work on nights and weekends and will be required to successfully complete a Powerline Technician Apprenticeship in a program chosen by the employer.
