Position Purpose:

The Communications Advisor provides strategic communications expertise to the executive, senior leadership team, all business units within the company and other key stakeholders. This position delivers communications services for various initiatives as well an inherent understanding on how to best position material and programs designed for employees and leaders. This role deals with strategic business and confidential employee information as directed by the executive committee, senior management and Human Resources.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with the People and Safety management team to support internal communications initiatives
  • Writes, edits and disseminates corporate information to employees through various channels, including but not limited to, executive memos, emails and speeches and employee town hall presentations; electronic and printed newsletters issue notes, FAQs, backgrounders; publications, awards submissions, intranet and closed circuit tv content, as well as executive, committee and board meeting briefing updates.
  • Provides communications support and advice to executive and senior leadership on confidential and sensitive matters involving executive and board decisions, mergers and acquisitions, shareholders communications, government announcements, human resources and executive appointments
  • Provides strategic advice and communications support to executive committee and senior leadership team on confidential and sensitive change management initiatives impacting employees, customers and other key stakeholders
  • Provides complete communications support and advice to the company’s Human Resources department including but not limited to, coordinating, writing and announcing all HR-related announcements (appointments, departures, transfers, etc), as well as sensitive labour relations matters on behalf of executive on issues such as workplace accidents, employee relations, staffing compensation, etc.
  • Provides research, content and writing expertise to cross-functional business units to disseminate and inform internal audiences about corporate initiatives and support engagement activities.
  • Provides communications advice and support for mergers and acquisitions submissions which may contain sensitive business and staffing information
  • Provides leadership and expertise in organizing employee United Way Campaigns and other charity fundraising drives involving the promotion, distribution and collection of payroll deduction forms, as well as other employee engagement activities and communications
  • Provides leadership and organizational support for employee town halls and employee engagement events
  • Advises and provides communications expertise with crisis communications and issues and reputation management as required
  • Using identified communications mechanisms, provides regular updates regarding corporate and industry-related news, to ensure key stakeholders are aware of current events impacting the company
  • Sources services as required for the production of internal communications collateral materials, branded promotional items and employee events
  • Provides general photography. video and graphic design support
  • Supports internal stakeholder engagement activities, as well as ensuring the successful delivery of related programs
  • Assists in the coordination of involvement in community and special events
  • Provides technical expertise in the planning, design and implementation of key initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline processes to improve service delivery.
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards. 

Education & Specialized Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
  • Solid understanding of internal communications practices, culture, reputational and issues management
  • Solid understanding of digital communications
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience including corporate communications, public relations, issues management, social media, event and media management in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset 

Skills/Abilities/Competencies:

  • Experience working with senior leadership and handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex issues
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information in an organized and concise way
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines  
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders
