Distribution Design Technologist

Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro Inc. is a local distribution company that is responsible for distributing electricity to 98,000 homes and businesses within the City of Kitchener and Township of Wilmot.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare designs (based on company and industry standards and guidelines), material lists, estimates of costs, construction details, drawings and diagrams relating to the distribution and street lighting systems, including overhead and underground installations.
  • Prepare designs for the installation of new or upgraded electrical service connections for residential, commercial and industrial projects.
  • Coordinate with municipal staff, other utilities, consultants, developers, contractors, and various internal departments to ensure the timely provision of electrical power, and customer contact to resolve issues regarding design and construction, scheduling, and project coordination.
  • Assist in maintaining record drawings, maps, and a variety of clerical and technical work as required, in the office and in the field.
  • Utilize various desktop software applications.
  • Liaise with field staff, and perform other duties as required.
  • Assist Supervisor/Engineer with the preparation of engineering design, material specification and construction standards and contracts.

Qualification

  • Diploma in a three-year Electrical Engineering Technology program from a recognized Community College, preferably in the Electrical Power option, and eligibility for O.A.C.E.T.T. registration.
  • Minimum two years of related utility engineering experience is preferred.
  • Can demonstrate sound engineering judgement in decisions and can demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) and software programs for CAD.
  • Must be able to work independently and carry out assignments of substantial complexity requiring a sound understanding of related engineering disciplines.
  • Have good project coordination skills.
  • Have a working knowledge of the Distribution Safety Code (Reg. 22/04), Ontario Electrical Safety Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Class 'G' driver's license in good standing.
  • An excellent health, safety, and attendance record.
