JOURNEYPERSON SUBSTATION ELECTRICIAN (SCADA and P & C)

Reporting to the Station Maintenance Supervisor, you will work towards position objectives at ever increasing levels of responsibility relative to your training and experience. While in this position, the successful candidate must meet the Journey Level certification requirements. The incumbent will be responsible for SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System, Wide Area Ethernet Communication Networks, Protection Schemes, remote controllable devices installed at Burlington Hydro Substations and in the field, and Substations preventive maintenance. The P&C Technologist shall be capable of working independently or as a team member of a larger workgroup. As the individuals skill level improves they will work towards the following objectives based on the Supervisor’s direction. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Familiar with work in compliance with all safe work practices, rules and regulations as set out by Burlington Hydro Inc., the MOL and IHSA, among others
  • Perform in a safe and efficient manner all installation, testing and maintenance work related to the Substation Electrician Discipline, including some work related to the underground distribution system; operating voltages up to and including 27,600 volts phase to phase
  • Operate in a safe and efficient manner all machinery, equipment and tools used in the performance of the work, including various types of vehicles, various types of hoists, a variety of power tools as well as a variety of hand tools and test equipment
  • Perform electrical and mechanical work to install, test and maintain all substation primary switches, power transformers, bus work, medium voltage cables, circuit breakers, protective devices, batteries and chargers
  • Perform, install, configure, commission ongoing maintenance and administration of all intelligent electronic devices installed on the Distribution System: Remote Terminal Units, Data Concentrators, Fault Indicators, Automated O/H and U/G switches and Self-Healing Schemes
  • Perform graphical user interface design, database editing, programming, administrative activities and maintenance of all SCADA System software and hardware components to achieve reliable control of the distribution system and ensure system security; provide technical support to internal and external customers, ensuring optimal Distribution System performance
  • Perform design, installation, configuration, commissioning and ongoing maintenance and administration of all components required for data communications on the Operations Network: optical fiber, Serial & Ethernet wireless devices, SonicWall network security /firewall appliance, CISCO routers, media converters
  • Program and/or calibrate protective devices, substation SCADA and System Intelligent Electronic Devices, while working under the direction of the Lead Hand
  • Install and maintain AC and DC substation service systems
  • Investigate/troubleshoot all problems related to substation equipment failures and SCADA system
  • Locate underground cables; test and fault locates on underground distribution plant.
  • Review and revise related electrical and mechanical drawings, schematics and logic diagrams using AutoCAD
  • Maintain accurate records for installation and maintain equipment
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Successful completion (Diploma) of a 3-year College level Technologist program in a related field; and minimum 5 years of experience in the field
  • Successful completion of the MEARIE Substation Electrician program
  • Ability to work from work orders, specifications, standards, blueprints/drawings and instructions
  • Excellent verbal and written English language communication skills, including reading comprehension; as well as excellent mathematical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills; a good work ethic with a positive approach to work and coworkers; energetic and motivated with an excellent attendance record
  • Possess and maintain a level of physical fitness essential to do the work, including the ability to climb structures and work confidently at heights; to work in confined spaces and the willingness and ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Willingness and ability to eventually perform regular emergency call-out and on call duties, and work under emergency conditions; with the willingness and ability to respond to a call-out and be on the work site within one hour of receiving the call
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Drivers’ License with a clean abstract; with the willingness and ability to obtain a Class DZ License within 12 months
  • Good working knowledge of Windows based software such as MS Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is an asset
  • Current First Aid / CPR / AED certification a definite asset
