DISTRIBUTION ENGINEER

The Distribution Engineer is responsible for system planning and variance technical studies, fostering harmonious labour relations, providing support to develop and maintain operational and capital budget, seeking process improvement opportunities, as well as ensuring compliance to Company polices and all applicable legislated codes. 

This position reports to the Planning Supervisor of CNPI. 

What this role does:

  • Responsible for system planning and various engineering studies, including Distribution System Plan, major project development, and engineering design.
  • Manage the design and execution of protection and control systems and ensure safe work practices are incorporated.
  • Provide technical support as required for line design, line department, and substation department.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of FortisOntario’s technical standards.
  • Assist with coordination and project management of capital programs, including communications with external contractors, engineering consultants, and customers.
  • Provide technical details to Finance and Regulatory Departments to aid in the completion of OEB cost of service filings.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders, including employees, external customers, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Seek process improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance to Company technical standards, polices, and all applicable legislated codes.
  • Provide technical training and supports for the engineering department and operations’ departments.
  • Perform other duties assigned including travels to other FortisOntario offices. 

What makes you a successful candidate?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with P. Eng. or EIT.
  • Two (2) to ten (10) years relevant work experience in the electrical utility industry.
  • Possess knowledge of the Ontario Energy Board regulations and common electrical utility practices.
  • Experience in system planning and communications, line or substation design, protection and control, power system communication, SCADA, GIS, project management, budgeting, Net Present Value analysis, and Regulation 22/04.
  • Understand the concept of load flow and short circuit calculation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills including the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically with strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, AutoCAD and database management.
  • Unrelenting commitment and passion to safety, ethics, and continuous improvement.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ontario “G” license with a clean driving abstract - travel within Ontario may be required.
  • Must be and remain fully vaccinated.
