OEC is currently seeking an Accounting Manager who will play an instrumental role in ensuring all corporate and regulatory compliance requirements are met, in addition to providing support to the company’s strategic initiatives. This individual will be required to work through tight deadlines and manage a number of Finance and Accounting activities including, financial analysis, management report preparation, and play a key role in budget and forecast activities. 

The Accounting Manager will provide leadership and coaching to accounting staff, undertake projects to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting processes and functions and work with other departments to ensure an effective system of internal controls.

Key Duties and Responsibilities Include: 

  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with IFRS and the Ontario Energy Board’s Accounting Procedures Handbook 
  • Support the accounting team and act as resource for all related functions performed within the department, ensure proper classification of expenditures, review and approve all journal entries, prepare/review general ledger account reconciliations
  • Provide leadership and development of staff and all associated human resources activities for the area. (eg. hiring, terminations, performance reviews, development of SMART objectives, training, etc.)
  • Manage the month end and year end processes, account analysis/reconciliation and preparation of the financial statements, identify reasons for variances to budget and prior year
  • Co-ordinate and review MD&A reporting for the board and monthly KPI reporting, quarterly financial packages and annual year end working files for audit
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets/forecasts; taking a lead role as required for key components
  • Maintain taxation processes including review of monthly provisions, timely remittance of installment payments including year-end reconciliations and reporting to the required authorities
  • Manage an effective system of internal controls by ensuring sound accounting practices and procedures, make recommendations to improve efficiency, ensure proper written documentation over processes and controls
  • Ensure purchasing card process and expense statement compliance
  • Ensure a timely and accurate accounts receivable and payable process
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor 

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • University Degree in Business Administration/Finance
  • Completed CPA, CMA or CPA, CGA designation
  • 3 - 5 years’ of post-designation accounting experience required in a leadership accounting role, preferably in a service business
  • 2+ years in a supervisory/managerial role required
  • Experience working in a regulated business environment is an asset
  • Strong technical, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Advanced operational knowledge of Excel
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making with appropriate level of discretion as the situation dictates
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal
  • Excellent customer service skills including the ability to resolve conflicts
  • Display a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy and confidentiality when necessary
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently or as part of team
  • Must display keen attention to detail and have the ability to prioritize accordingly in a demanding and fast-paced environment
