Director, Health/Safety, Security and Environment

We’re looking for a Director, Health/Safety, Security and Environment to join our team.

Reporting to VP Corporate Relations/CHRO, the Director, Health/Safety, Security and Environment is responsible to support Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and lead proactive loss prevention and control programs across multiple sites. As a strategic partner support Senior Leadership, Field Operations and other departmental stakeholders on oversight of OHSMS.

Key responsibilities of this position include but not limited to:

  • Lead, direct and assist in the development of the Health and Safety strategy, policy and procedures and proactive loss prevention and control programs
  • Manage and develop techniques that will eliminate or reduce the risk of a workplace injury, illness or damage to property
  • Deliver technical and operational expertise and advice to stakeholders
  • Assist in the coaching, mentoring and implementation of the programs in the field
  • Oversight of Joint Health & Safety Committees
  • Educate, counsel and assist Operational Supervisors and support Internal Responsibility System (IRS) relative to the OHSA Act and Regulations as well as other industry specific legislation and standards
  • Inspect, investigate, collaborate, recommend, assist, analyze safety concerns, corrective actions, enforcement of OHSMS standards, adherence to procedures, hazard analysis, safe work procedures, ergonomics, safety inspections, incidents, reports
  • Organize public safety campaigns/programs. Liaison with outside agencies on employee and public safety
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness and response planning. Carry out responsibilities under the Emergency Plan and supports business recovery and continuity plans
  • Co-ordinate and educate Leadership roles on their legal responsibilities, assisting them to cascade within their divisions.
  • Liaise with legislative bodies and other agencies associated with health and safety including but not limited to MOL, IHSA, WSPS, CSSE, EDA, MEARIE, ESA, WSIB, MTO, and CEA
  • Oversight and follow up on accurate, timely completion of various health & safety surveys, audits and reporting requirements
  • Oversight of security systems

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related discipline
  • Certification or designation in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Certification in an electrical trade would be considered an asset
  • Minimum seven years of safety & health experience focused on organization-wide responsibilities across diverse stakeholder groups at all levels
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
  • Knowledge of Security of Facilities
  • Self-motivated, proactive thinker, flexible and adaptable
  • Ability to provide simultaneous support, problem solve and multi-task for needs across multiple sites
  • Ability to promote a culture of safety and a culture of care; promote personal responsibility and line accountability for safety; work to resolve safety issues
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, listening, speaking and writing) and a friendly, pleasant manner. Communicate accurately and specifically as required for the task, issue or action at hand.
  • Must be able to meet tight deadlines, manage conflicting priorities, and work well under pressure in a rapidly changing environment. Deliver expected results on time.
  • Flexibility to work outside of core hours and to work in the field with Operations teams in possible emergency situations.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize according to workload
  • Calm, diplomatic, and pleasant demeanor
