MANAGER OF HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources & Safety, Chief Privacy Officer, the Manager of Health, Safety and Environment is accountable for providing organization wide leadership and strategic direction to ensure the effective implementation and monitoring of Energy+ Inc.’s Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS). The successful candidate will provide technical expertise with a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement. Guided by the goals and objectives of the Organization and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, excellence and wellness, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – to be the Utility that makes a difference! 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works within the Team to assist in the development and implementation of corporate health, safety programs, environmental programs, policies and strategies to assure the fostering of a healthy workplace, strong safety and environmental culture and ongoing compliance with applicable employee health, safety and environmental legislation / directives and guidelines.
  • Monitors, reviews, interprets, and summarizes legislative requirements regarding health, safety and environmental compliance; recommends and develops strategies and solutions, corrective actions and assists with implementing resulting infrastructure and operational changes.
  • Ensures standardization across locations for all legislation and regulations.
  • Updates and maintains the Departmental Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) to ensure compliance with applicable law including scheduling of internal / external audits, updating of all other internal policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Provides oversight to the Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • Promote public environmental awareness and education
  • Leads Environmental Stewardship initiatives and strategies to reduce our carbon footprint, continuous improvements with respect to sustainable practices such as recycling practices, new green initiatives, waste management etc.
  • Consolidates, analyzes, and summarizes health and safety compliance data for management inspections and reports; produces required presentations and reports.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of related management, technical, and administrative training.
  • Assists with the completion of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and updates, identifies training gaps, and works with HR to reconcile scheduling and records.
  • Develops and recommends proactive strategies and cost-effective alternatives to deal with emerging health, safety and environmental trends.
  • Investigates and determines contributing factors for all accidents and / or incidents, including workplace violence, and recommends prevention or corrective strategies to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. 

    • Develops, trains and updates orientation packages and requirements for all employees, contractors working onsite, temporary staff, and students.
    • Assist in implementation of Business Continuity Program;
    • Energy+ Inc. Liaison with WSIB, MOL, MOE, IHSA, and ESA;
    • Prepare budgets and monitor targets; 

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a University degree / college diploma in OHS. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
    • The Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), The Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation or an equivalent designation would be considered an asset.
    • The successful applicant must possess a minimum of three (3) years experience as a Supervisor in Health and Safety Management.
    • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite.
    • Excellent facilitation skills in order to conduct training and workshops.

      • Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license, in good standing.  
      • Must have a thorough knowledge of industry Rulebooks, and Regulations including. Electrical Utilities Safety Rules for Ontario, Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), Ministry of Labour (MOL), Ministry of Environment (MOE), Ontario Energy Board (OEB), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Infrastructure Health Safety Association (IHSA), and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
      • Familiarity with a recognized Health and Safety Management System is a minimum requirement. Working knowledge of Occupational Health Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001, International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001, CSA Z-1000-06 standards, Ontario Regulation 22/04 (Electrical Distribution Safety) and Emergency Preparedness/Business Continuity would also be an asset.
      • The successful applicant must possess strong leadership skills, exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, and must have the ability to foster collaboration amongst Management and Unionized Employees in an effective manner.
