Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering and Operations, you will be one of several senior leaders that are collectively responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and management of departments that include Systems Engineering, Operations Engineering, Design Engineering, System Planning, Protection & Control, Lines, Forestry, Construction, and Stations.  In addition, as a member of the corporation’s leadership team you will contribute more broadly towards developing and ensuring that the goals, objectives and strategic plan of London Hydro are achieved. 

JOB DUTIES

Your mandate as Director of Engineering will focus on achieving or surpassing initiatives and targets established in the corporate strategic plan. More specifically, you will: 

  • Support the Vice President, Engineering and Operations, by participating along with your peers in setting corporate and division goals and targets, and ensuring that corporate goals, targets, policies and legislated regulatory requirements are being met – internally and externally.
  • Ensure long-term asset sustainment plans, annual resource and business plans, budgets and finances are reasonable, defensible and aligned with corporate strategy and objectives.
  • Liaise with industry professionals, corporate customers, city officials, industry associations, regulators and other agencies, as a senior representative of the corporation.
  • Provide decisions and direction on long-term and emergency operational and engineering issues.
  • Facilitate the development and enforcement of policies and procedures for the Engineering & Operations Division, exercising sound judgment when setting policies that may impact finance, safety and reliability
  • Manage departments within Engineering & Operations and promote, encourage and ensure the development, professionalism, and health and safety of department team members.
  • Develop, promote and encourage innovative solutions through up-to-date knowledge of new technologies and industry trends.
  • Leverage modern GIS, OMS, SCADA, Metering, IT and System Analysis systems to develop advanced system engineering solutions.
  • Prepare supporting documentation and rationales for rate applications and other regulatory filings.
  • Ensure processes, procedures, methods, standards and information systems are developed and enforced such that the department carries out responsibilities safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure the corporation’s adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA’s Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Electrical Safety Authority regulations, London Hydro work practices, and London Hydro’s Health & Safety Management System. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified Director of Engineering we seek must be able to meet the following requirements: 

  • Your degree in Electrical Engineering is combined with registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • You offer no fewer than 10 years of progressive managerial experience at a senior level, as well as experience in a regulated industry (preferably in the electric utility sector in engineering and operations) and liaising with senior management, customers and external agencies.
  • You are knowledgeable in the planning, design, maintenance and operation of high-voltage overhead and underground distribution systems, including emerging Smart Grid technologies, SCADA, substations, and protections, and are familiar with related rules, regulations and procedures.
  • You are a proven leader adept at establishing and maintaining positive, effective cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization, and at employing effective conflict resolution tactics.
  • You demonstrate strong business acumen and are experienced in preparing detailed reports for, and delivering presentations to, various audiences.
