ENGINEERING SERVICES TECHNICIAN

 

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing the customer with the necessary information regarding Burlington Hydro policies, procedures, design standards and charges for servicing new and existing industrial, commercial and residential facilities for both overhead pole lines and underground electrical distribution. Perform field visits for maintenance inquiries and prepare instruction orders to rectify problem. This position is also responsible for the monitoring, administration, architecture and support of the enterprise Oracle GIS system, performing tasks such as; application development, configuration, reporting, quality assurance, documentation, etc. 

Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, you will work toward position objectives at ever increasing levels of responsibility based on direction from the Director and relative to your training and experience. These objectives include but are not limited to the following:               

KEY DUTIES:

The ideal candidate will have the following: 

  • Design Hydro Plant layout for servicing new and the upgrading of industrial, commercial and residential facilities
  • Prepare labour and material estimates for projects, requisition and commit associated construction materials
  • Prepare drawings, sketches, and select pole framing standards to be included in design packages
  • Prepare overhead and underground servicing designs, whether new or an upgrade of an existing service
  • Answer inquiries by contractors, electricians and service customers regarding service requirements and, if necessary, meet with them on site
  • Research, architect, develop, implement and support technological solutions within the Oracle environment
  • Administer, monitor and maintain the Oracle database (and associated web applications).
  • Develop business requirements, collaborate with end users and IT department, define detailed technical specifications
  • Application Development, prepare GUI design, data model design
  • Create and prepare database reports and analysis
  • Install new software releases and/or upgrades, facilitate UAT testing, coordinate deployment to production environment
  • Assist surveyor in the layout of Hydro plant
  • Perform guying calculations, voltage drop calculations and pulling tension calculations
  • Review and coordinate subdivision and townhouse projects
  • Answer inquiries from customers regarding voltage and tree problems and take appropriate action to rectify
  • Act as a liaison between customer and construction crews/contractors
  • Prepare and track instruction orders in the system and assemble design packages for construction crews; follow up on completed instruction orders
  • Upgrade transformers that are subjected to excessive over loads and arrange/notify customers of power interruptions
  • Calculate transformer, feeder and fuse loading when called upon by supervisor or as part of project design
  • Monitor the transformers in stock to ensure surplus transformers are not requisitioned
  • While in the field, always be aware of any facilities that require repair, i.e., rotten poles, defective equipment
  • All other duties as assigned  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A degree in Electrical and Computing Engineering is preferred
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or the ability and willingness to achieve same
  • Knowledge and application of GIS/Information Technology would be an asset
  • Experience in Agile development methodology and Automated test tool would be an asset
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in electrical and civil construction design, standards and practices, combined with demonstrated knowledge of electricity, and ability to read and interpret construction and electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution system (overhead and underground)
  • Familiar with C.S.A. overhead and underground standards pertaining to distribution system and equipment
  • Advanced knowledge of electricity, AC circuits and electrical equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and electrical drawings
  • Drafting skills and proficient in use of design software, i.e. AutoCAD, Microstation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office applications – Word, Access and Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including reading comprehension, with the ability to communicate clearly in English; excellent mathematical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills; a good work ethic with a positive approach to work and coworkers; energetic and motivated with an excellent attendance record
  • Possess and maintain a valid and clean abstract with a class “G” Ontario driver’s license; current First Aid and CPR Certification considered an asset
