Waterloo North Hydro Inc. (WNH) is a progressive electric distribution utility servicing the City of Waterloo and the Townships of Wellesley and Woolwich. On a 24/7 basis, WNH’s System Operator is responsible to monitor, control and direct the efficient operation of the electrical distribution system including four transmission-connected transformer stations; dispatch work crews; prepare and direct switching procedures and operations; prepare records and reports on the operation of the electrical distribution system; plan and prepare for system outages; provide hold-off's; co-ordinate system operations with the IESO, Hydro One and neighbouring utilities; communicate effectively with customers, other agencies and authorities. 

We are inviting applications for a competent team player with the ability to maintain strong attention to detail, has a good knowledge of electric power distribution equipment and circuit theory, and a clear interest in all aspects of operating a community’s electrical distribution system. Interested candidates must apply in writing to express their interest in the position, outlining their education, experience and related qualifications. The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications: 

  • Certification confirming successful completion of the MEARIE (EDA) Journeyperson Electrical Operator Training Program (or at least 4,000 hours completed toward MEARIE certification)
  • High regard for personal and public safety in a team setting
  • Graduate of a three year community college program in Electrical Engineering Technology or significant LDC Engineering or Operations experience
  • C.E.T. designation is an asset
  • Advanced skills in the use of computer software applications including SCADA, OMS, GIS (ESRI), MS Office
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Ability to remain calm and thoughtful while problem solving in a high-stress environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Proven ability to work effectively and safely both individually and in a team environment
  • Valid Class ‘G’ driver’s licence and excellent driving record
  • Willing to work rotating 12.25-hour shifts on a 24/7/365 shift schedule  

We recently moved into a new Service Centre. We offer an exceptional work environment in a modern Control Room with new SCADA and OMS systems. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic problem solver with strong computer skills to join our team and take on the technical challenge of learning this role. After the successful completion of a training and orientation period to become familiar with WNH’s systems and equipment, the successful applicant will be assigned to work as part of our Control Room team and will be expected to monitor and remotely operate high voltage distribution system equipment.
