JOURNEYPERSON AND/OR APPRENTICE ELECTRICAL OPERATOR

 

Reporting to the System Control Supervisor, you will work toward position objectives at ever increasing levels of responsibility based on direction from the Director and relative to your training and experience; objectives include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Be or become familiar with and work in compliance with all safe work practices, rules, and regulations as set out by Burlington Hydro Inc. (BHI), the MOL, and IHSA, among others
  • As applicable to your level of experience be enrolled in and be willing and able to successfully complete the MEARIE Electrical Operator Certification Program; or equivalent if Journey level applicant
  • Become fully conversant with BHI’s Sub Transmission and Distribution Systems
  • Ultimately, based on your experience and skill level, you will monitor, control and direct the safe and efficient operation of the electrical distribution system and prepare records and reports on the operation of the electrical distribution system
  • Dispatch work crews; provide hold offs on breakers; prepare and direct switching procedures and operations to establish work protection
  • Field calls and communicate effectively with internal and external customers, other agencies and authorities; coordinate system operations with Hydro One and neighbouring LDCs
  • Assist with the maintenance duties, field work and drawing verifications
  • Assist with the department records and system updates, including updating the mapping system
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned from time to time 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following: 

  • Successful completion (Diploma) of a 3 year College level Technologist program in a related field; or equivalent experience if a Journey level applicant
  • MEARIE Journeyperson Electrical Operator Certificate or recognized equivalent; if an apprentice level, the ability and willingness to achieve same
  • Full certification in the Ontario Utility Work Protection Code; or the ability and willingness to acquire same
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the following systems: System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); Customer Information System (CIS); Geographic Information System (GIS); and Auto CAD
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office applications – Word, Access and Excel 
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills including reading comprehension, with the ability to communicate clearly in English; excellent mathematical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills; a good work ethic with a positive approach to work and coworkers; energetic and motivated with an excellent attendance record
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and thoughtful in a stressful environment with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Possess and maintain a level of physical fitness essential to do the work
  • Ability and willingness to work on a rotating 24/7 shift schedule 365 days of the year, and to be readily available for on-call and emergency duties; with the ability and willingness to respond and be in the Control Room within one hour
  • Possess and maintain a valid and clean abstract with a class “G” Ontario driver’s license; current First Aid and CPR Certification considered an asset
