Position Purpose:

This position will report to the Director Power Services.  This position will be part of Alectra Power Service’s Design team and support the department in the creation of design estimates, design drawings and other duties as necessary in order to facilitate APSI customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Detail design of overhead and underground distribution systems including substations and street lighting.
  • Structural Analysis of overhead systems, voltage drop calculations, cable pulling calculations, photometric calculations, relay setting calculations, SCADA configuration, and other analysis as required from time to time.
  • Material co-ordination requirements with Supply Chain Services
  • Project co-ordination with other utilities and authorities to process/secure permits, agreements, municipal consent, etc.
  • Field visits and site meetings with Alectra staff, customers, contractors, consultants, agencies and authorities
  • Integrated co-ordination of designs with customers, Construction Supervisors, and other field staff.
  • Field verification of existing site/electrical plant conditions
  • Preparation of cost estimates and bills of material for work orders
  • Preparation and issuance of work order and maintaining associated files and records
  • Closing and As Constructed analysis of projects including invoice analysis.
  • Participate on various working groups as needed.  Foster an environment to help mentor, train, assist other technicians including Co-Op students.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2 or 3 year Electrical Engineering Technology program with Power Option.
  • OACETT certification as a C.Tech. or C.E.T.
  • 5 or more years electrical utility experience would be considered an asset, including:
    • Familiarity with overhead, underground distribution systems design up to 44kV level
    • In-depth knowledge of design criteria such as tension and guying calculations, conductor load, etc. (experience with SPIDACALC preferable)
    • Street lighting photometric analysis and detail design
    • Proficiency with High voltage relay and protection scheme programming and SCADA operations
    • Materials and construction standards
    • Understanding of approvals process, PUCC’s, permits, etc.
    • Familiarity with CSA standards, ESA Regulation 22/04 and other requirements by Provincial and Federal regulated agencies
  • Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD and MicroStation), MS Excel, Word, Outlook, Project.
  • Well developed verbal & written communication skills as well as strong customer relations capabilities.
  • Safe working habits are essential
  • Flexible attitude toward work assignment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driver record
