Powerline Technician

 

With over 100 years of experience, EPCOR Water Canada works with industry, municipalities and communities to design, build, finance and operate water and wastewater treatment plants, distribution and collection systems. We serve more than 85 communities and industrial sites in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, making sure that the water exceeds public health, environmental and industrial requirements. 

The Powerline Technician performs skilled and hazardous electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electric distribution lines, transformers, and related equipment. 

EPCOR has two (2) permanent full-time positions available in Collingwood, ON! 

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Powerline Technician,is accountable for, but not limited to: 

  • Performing the construction of overhead lines; setting, framing of poles (primary and secondary), stringing and energizing conductors.
  • Performing the construction of underground lines; installation of primary and secondary, ducts and conductors; termination and energizing primary and secondary conductors.
  • Performing electric utility connections, disconnections, concerning customer service activity as requested/required.
  • Trimming trees around energized electrical power lines.
  • Inspecting installation by others to ensure compliance with EPCOR standards.
  • Repairing street lighting
  • Operating proficiently all underground equipment for locating, fault finding, and hi-pot testing
  • Working in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislation, regulations, and statutes.
  • Cleaning and repairing most equipment used on the job.
  • Operating various equipment and material such as:
    • Aerial bucket truck / material handler
    • Radial boom derrick
    • Operate test equipment, live line tools, substation switchgear and breakers, mobile transformer fall arrest, personal protection equipment and climbing equipment
    • Fork Lift
    • Underground locating/fault finding equipment
    • Underground high potential equipment
    • Various hand tools
    • Line clearing equipment e.g. chipper, chainsaw, pruner
  • Providing back-up support to other Departments, as assigned, that are in accordance with job responsibilities and/or necessary departmental or corporate objectives. 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications: 

  • Grade 12 Diploma or GED or equivalent is required.
  • Certification as a Power Line Journey Linesperson.
  • Valid Class DZ Drivers Licence in good standing
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Utilities Safety Rules (EUSR)
  • Ability to operate a bucket truck /material handler, and radial boom derrick.
  • Must attend and re-certify as required, all relevant in-services training regarding occupational health and safety, such as; WHMIS, First Aid, CPR.
  • Must attend and re-certify as required, all relevant operational courses such as; Utility Work Protection Code, Propane Handling, Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings and procedure manuals.
  • Self motivated while safely working independently, along with good housekeeping practices
  • Communicates with coworkers, management, and the general public in order to follow verbal and/or written directions and instructions, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical distribution construction, inspection, operation, testing and maintenance.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces as well as working in varying weather conditions.
  • Willing to work with energized high-voltage conductors and equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safety and effectively perform required duties.
  • History of safety awareness and a safe work record.

You have the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and are able to provide leadership and coaching to your team members.

Hours of work: 80 hours bi-weekly 

The successful candidate must also participate in the on-call rotation system and reside within 45min of the EPCOR Collingwood service centre as per the Collective Agreement. 

Out of town work may be required.
