Position Purpose:

The Specialist, Health and Safety leads activities to educate and supports Network Operation’s managers and employees on Health and Safety Programs and standards to ensure compliance with safety, regulatory and legislative compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports development and implementation of corporate health and safety program, policies and procedures
  • Tracks, reports and evaluates incidents and consults with managers and supervisors on preventative recommendations, evaluation of risks and follow up actions
  • Assists with investigations and risk assessments, including identifying opportunities for program enhancement and increased education
  • Reviews and analyzes reports on health and safety performance, identifying trends and recommending opportunities for improvement
  • Supports co-ordination and implementation of internal and external audit activities, including participation in activities to achieve certification/standardization
  • Evaluates effectiveness of health and safety programs through site visits, work observations, spot assessments and audits
  • Assists with contractor pre-qualification reviews and contractor management program as required
  • Keeps abreast of changing legislation and best practices and provides subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders including Joint Health and Safety Committees, training, etc.
  • Provides technical expertise in the planning, design and implementation of projects and key initiatives
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Input monthly statistics, observations, incidents into the Intelex Safety Management System
  • Works in partnership with the Claims and Disability Coordinators to assist employees early and safe return to work from any workplace or non-occupational injuries or illness.
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Skills & Qualifications:

Education

  • MEA Certificate of Registration, or equivalent, as a Power Lineman/Cableman and/or Station Technician
  • Degree or Diploma in relevant discipline preferably Occupational Health and Safety
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA) or Health and Safety Auditor Training are an asset
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license 

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Power Lineman/Cableman and/or Station Technician
  • Thorough knowledge of Overhead/Underground Construction and Maintenance up to the 44 KV Level.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience as a Health and Safety Practitioner
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset 

Specialized Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of safety acts, regulations, legislation and codes
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
