Position Purpose:

The Supervisor of Design, oversees the Engineering Design group including the design of customer projects, and relocations of distribution system infrastructure. This role also focuses on prioritizing, tracking and overseeing projects driven by the Road Authorities and individual customers. In addition, the supervisor will be responsible for the approval of project designs to ensure technical competence and design compliance in accordance with current policies and standards. The Supervisor will also be providing leadership and support to the Customer Capital Design staff by setting and monitoring departmental objectives, policies and budgets.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, organizes, reports on status and oversees the implementation of electrical distribution system projects including, budget estimates, detailed estimates, complete designs, obtaining approvals, liaising with other internal departments, road authorities, municipalities, contractors, regulatory agencies, customers and internal departments to provide project information in a timely manner
  • Coordinates and participates in site plan reviews to identify in advance any potential challenges or hydro servicing requirements for all types of proposed developments or re-developments
  • Ensures designs are completed with adequate lead times and within capital budget and KPI requirements
  • Monitors project estimated vs. actual costs and reviews variance reports with team
  • Supervises the design of non-controllable capital projects
  • Technical assessment of third Party Attachment application permits and design reviews
  • Conducts the process review and continual improvement of the design/build cycle to align with industry best practices
  • Plans, organizes and supervises daily activities of operational unit
  • Provides coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance and advice
  • Provides input into department goals and objectives
  • Leads and/or participates in department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget
  • Researches, recommends and implements new or enhanced policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Skills & Qualifications: 

Education

Engineering Technologist Diploma with C.E.T. designation and a registered member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)

Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Civil/Structural Engineering with P. Eng. designation and a registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in good standing would be an asset  

Must hold and maintain a valid “G” driver’s license 

Specialized knowledge

In-depth knowledge of technical specifications and standards, including Alectra Standards, CSA, ESA and CEA

Certification and knowledge of the Utility Work Protection, Occupation Health and Safety Act and IHSA/EUSA regulations that apply to distribution system design and construction

Engineering knowledge of electrical theory, structural alalysis, power system analysis and control

Working knowledge of regulatory and governmental requirements (OEB Rules and Regulations, PSWHA)

Knowledge of Microstation or AutoCAD drafting, SPIDA Calc., cable pulling calculations, circuit loading analysis

Proficiency with MS Office applications

Fluency in Project Management disciplines to manage project scope, budget, and schedule

 

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical distribution system design, construction methods and distribution system components and applications, including experience in managing budgets

Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or lead role, or successful completion of a recognized leadership or supervisory course

Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset

Strong ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions

Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisely

Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
