Electrical Code Engineer

General Accountabilities:

Working within the Regulatory and Safety Programs department, the successful candidate will report to Director – Engineering & Program development. Applying the Ontario Electrical Safety Code along with other Codes and Standards, a Code Engineer will provide technical and engineering consultation to ESA Operation service including Directors, Managers, and field staff.

  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on the interpretation and application of electrical codes to achieve greater consistency of interpretation, proper inspection performance and procedures with respect to wiring and electrical installations and approval of electrical equipment. Stakeholders include ESA Inspection personnel, consulting engineers, contractors, manufacturers, distributors and others.
  • Conduct engineering/technical analysis of problems and produce memoranda and bulletins in consultation with supervisor to resolve field problems. Receive requests from supervisor to examine particular aspects of electrical installations or electrical equipment. Communicate with other advisors, managers, certification organizations, equipment manufacturers, consultants, and utility staff, provincial and other organizations. Apply the Electrical Safety code, other codes and regulations, equipment standards, safety records and technical literature. Propose rationalized solution(s) to supervisor based on findings.
  • Maintain an awareness of territorial inspection needs, inspection issues, emerging trends in installations, opportunities for new programs and make suggestions for improving processes as appropriate. 
  • Advice on code changes needed to improve safety, address new technology, clarify existing wording or correlate with products or other installation standards. Prepare proposals on amendments to the Canadian Electrical Code. 
  • Represent ESA on various Codes & Standards development committees.
  • Assist supervisor in preparing guidance on accepting equipment certifications to non-Canadian standards, reviewing reports of electrical fires and contact accidents.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education:

Requires a knowledge of electrical engineering theory to appreciate the factors involved in design, layout, electrical engineering requirements and specifications, to understand the problems dealing with the selection, installation and manufacture of electrical components and assemblies in relation to requirements and interpretations of the Electrical Safety Code. Requires a knowledge of electrical and electronic theory as well as related mathematics, circuits, physics and such as these might apply to electrical installations and equipment. Requires a knowledge of English to respond to enquiries and prepare written reports and memoranda.  This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four year university education in electrical engineering or by having the equivalent level of education.

Experience:

  • Requires experience with electrical design and installation best practices including working with electrical diagrams, drawings and specifications.
  • Familiar with the selection and application of electrical equipment for suitability and the design and installation characteristics of numerous types. Experience with the preparation, interpretation and application of electrical installation codes is an asset
  • Familiarity with ESA’s inspection, operations, policies and procedures. 
  • Knowledgeable of the regulations and standards applicable to electrical equipment approval and certification.
  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
  • Registered as a Professional engineer in the province of Ontario (or equivalent designation) preferred
