Sartor & Associates Inc. has been retained by Entegrus Powerlines Inc. to recruit a Manager of Engineering. The position reports directly to the Director of Engineering and Operations. The position is responsible for managing day-to-day distribution engineering, as well as the implementation, coordination and supervision of all distribution engineering activities. The position will be based at either our Chatham or St. Thomas office as mutually agreed upon and the successful candidate will be required to supervise staff between the two offices.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Manager of Engineering will be in a critical leadership role. The position will have accountability for the Engineering Team consists of 13 staff which includes Engineering Technologists, Distribution Engineers, Engineering Technicians, Project Planner and an Operations Coordinator. Entegrus has approximately 130 staff across the entire company. 

DUTIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the engineering department, including the approval and preparation of design plans and specifications for the construction and repair of overhead and underground electric power distribution systems;
  • Review and assess capital cost estimates, including the development of economic considerations for major projects. Establish operating parameters for related equipment;
  • Work closely with line supervisors and line sub-foremen to review and approve engineering plans, including in-field construction decisions and supervision of tests. Ensure efficient and safe work by employees and contractors;
  • Manage utility construction projects, including contract administration, schedule coordination, inter-utility coordination and quality control.
  • Liaise with customers and municipal officials. Provide guidance to customers in applying the company’s Conditions of Service in establishing service requirements. Ensure appropriate engineering standards are consistently applied, including adherence to Distribution System Code and company policies
  • Monitor compliance with health and safety regulations, as well as other industry regulations, including ESA Standards and Ontario One Call requirements for locates. Ensure successful completion of ESA audits and implementation of procedures for electrical regulation compliance;
  • Conduct post project analysis and provide recommendations on how the organization can deliver exceptional service to its customers while maintaining a reliable distribution network at an affordable cost;
  • Prepare frequent detailed internal reports on the goals of the department and project status and progress.
  • Development and modification of processes, procedures and job aides to increase efficiency and accuracy of the engineering department 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: A degree in Electrical Engineering with a Professional Engineering License to practice in Ontario
  • Experience: A minimum of 7 years of engineering work experience, which should include a minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge: (i) extensive knowledge in electrical distribution designs, industry standards, and work practices; (ii) extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering related to utility power distribution systems; (iii) comprehensive understanding of SCADA, GIS and Operations (DC) (i.e. Protection and Control), (iv) strong knowledge and industry of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as associated regulations and best practices, and (v) knowledge of industry rules and regulations (including MOL, MOE, ESA, OEB, and EUSA)
  • Skills: (i) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, (ii) strong project management skills, (iii) extensive knowledge in electrical distribution designs, industry standards, and work practices; (iv) strong troubleshooting, problem resolution and engineering skills; (v) proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs (vi) strong time management skills and the ability to handle several large projects and initiatives concurrently.

An ability to respectfully communicate ideas and information (often technical) in writing to ensure that information and messages are understood and have the desired impact.

The Manager will need to have the competencies to listen accurately and understand unspoken, partly expressed thoughts, feelings and concerns of others. Included in this competency is an emphasis on cross-cultural sensitivity. The Manager will need to foster strong loyalty from direct reports and a willingness to cooperate from other organizational leaders. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

This is a full-time, non-union position based on 40 hours per week. Current hours of work are from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (with a 30-minute lunch), Monday-Friday. The successful applicant will also be available for the management on call rotation to supervise after hour emergencies as required. Candidates must possess a valid, unsuspended driver’s licence.
