E.L.K. Energy Inc. is a Local Distribution Company serving the communities of Belle River, Comber, Cottam, Essex, Harrow and Kingsville. We are currently accepting applications for the positions of:

 

Journeyman Powerline Technician or Apprentice

(2 positions available)

Reporting to the Operations Manager and under the general direction of the Sub-Foreman and/or Leadhand(s). The Journeyman Powerline Technician or Apprentice will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and construction of overhead and underground distribution lines. This position is part of the team who constructs, repairs, maintains and performs live line work on overhead/underground electrical distribution lines at voltages of up to 27,600 V.

When deemed to meet the requirements, the incumbent will also be required to perform regular on-call duties on a rotational basis responding to service calls during after-hour periods.

Main or Key Responsibilities

  • Construct, maintain and perform planned and emergency repairs on the 120 V to 27,600 V overhead and underground electrical distribution systems;
  • Install poles, conductors, transformers, switching devices, elbows, terminations, splices and provide cable locates using associated equipment as per safe practice guidelines;
  • Perform electric utility connections and disconnections as requested and required by customer service activity;
  • Liaise with supervisors and fellow team members to plan major switching operations and construction projects, keeping accurate records of equipment and material use;
  • Train apprentices, contractors, and oneself in correct and new work techniques and the safe operation of equipment;
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment, material use, and labour for regular work and trouble calls. Communicate with customers to provide service, ensure satisfaction, and safeguard public safety;
  • Work with confidence both in situations of high elevation and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member and be able to communicate effectively with team members as required for overhead and underground work;
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (e.g. meter installations).

The ideal candidate will possess the following minimum attributes, skills and qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Secondary School Diploma – OSSD or recognized equivalent;
  • Certified as a Journeyman Powerline Technician through an industry recognized training program or a registered apprentice in the trade. Must be licensed to work in the Province of Ontario;
  • Journeyman should have a minimum of 5 years’ on-the-job work experience as a Powerline Technician in an electrical distribution environment;
  • Powerline Technician college diploma (2-year program) considered an asset;
  • Full certification in the Ontario Utility Work Protection Code considered an asset;
  • Working knowledge of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules and industry safe work practices;
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and pertinent Regulations;
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR;
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, respect in the workplace and continued improvement of processes and procedures;
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and solid understanding of basic electrical circuit theory;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with demonstrated ability to complete relevant paperwork, journals, logbooks and reports;
  • Readily available for stand-by duty and shift work;
  • A level of physical fitness essential to work in a physically demanding environment that includes: heavy lifting, stretching and pulling, climbing to work confidently at heights and/or work in confined spaces in proximity to high voltage energized lines in extreme weather conditions, year-round;
  • Operate large vehicles and equipment (i.e. bucket truck/material handler, radial boom derrick, reel trailer, pole trailer) from set-up to completion of related jobs including documentation related to circle checks and traffic control;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings, and procedure manuals;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Valid Ontario Drivers’ License, Class ‘DZ’, to operate the vehicles handled in this position. Must have an excellent driving record and will need to provide a 3 year drivers record from the Ministry of Transportation prior to the second round of interviews;
  • A valid Ontario AZ or Restricted AZ driver’s license will be considered an asset.
