Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution Ltd. (NT Power) delivers power with pride to almost 50,000 customers within the Town of Newmarket, Town of Midland and Tay Township. Headquartered in Newmarket, Ontario, NT Power has an additional office in Midland, Ontario, which is approximately one hour north of Newmarket along the shores of Georgian Bay.  

We are looking for a dynamic, highly motivated, and proactive Distribution Engineer to join our team at our head office in Newmarket. 

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will have responsibility in providing technical and business support, to our Engineering and Operations Teams and production of robust distribution project designs, project management of major projects, and in the development, operation and maintenance of key computer systems and engineering tools needed to support distribution design (i.e. GIS, Asset Management System, Distribution Systems Analysis). The Distribution Engineer also leads or participates in distribution system planning and responsible for critical projects, including several related to engineering systems, distribution system modernization, microgrids, etc. This position will require you to participate in a rotational on-call/standby roster and report directly to the Manager of Engineering. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support management and technical teams in day-to-day planning, operations and maintenance of the distribution system.
  • Develop, implement and monitor the distribution system plan, risk and asset management to support operational efficiencies and ensure reliability.
  • Project manage major and critical NT Power projects including third party driven projects, engineering systems, distribution system modernization, microgrid, etc.
  • Lead system planning activities including system load forecasting, protection & control, load flow and short circuit studies and system reliability analyses.
  • Ensure safe connection of customers to the distribution system; conducting timely Connection Impact Assessments (CIA) and offers to connect.
  • Review designs submitted by consultants and electricians and work with the Manager of Engineering to initiate agreements to supply electrical service.
  • Assist in preparing, monitoring, and reporting on annual capital budgets, projects and Distribution System Plan.
  • Maintain and develop systems for accurate records of assets/equipment as part of the asset management plan and prepare reports on topics affecting the overall distribution system to ensure accurate records.
  • Assist in the review of applications for generation connections and third party attachments to the distribution system and with updating records and invoicing.
  • Analyze new material and work practices to confirm if they can be utilized to enhance the distribution system, as well as recommend & assist with drafting new NT Power distribution standards and procedures, and any modifications to existing standards.
  • Prepare estimates for work to be completed for internal use and for servicing agreements to developers and Offers to Connect.
  • Coordinate work with the town and municipalities within NT Power’s service areas and other utilities, developers and contractors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences or Engineering (electrical) from an accredited university. Applicants for the position must have a P.Eng. designation (or prove eligibility for registration).
  • Minimum 3 years’ working experience in most of the following areas: distribution system design, project management, line or substation design, asset management, budgeting, operations and construction within electrical utility industry, system planning, protection and control, power system communication.
  • Experience with software applications: AutoCAD, SpidaCalc, CYME, QUADRA, MS Office, databases, SCADA and GIS systems including Survalent and ESRI will be an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of USF Standards, CSA C22.3 No.1, CSA C22.3 No.7, Electrical Safety Code, Distribution System Code, Ontario Regulation 22/04 and other industry standards and regulations
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, high ethical and quality standards with adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the EUSA rule book, NT Power’s work practices.
  • Must be highly motivated team player with strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G Drivers license with a driving record in good standing
