Human Resources Generalist

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, this position is the primary point of contact for Human Resources services and programs. The HR Generalist assists in the development and implementation of human resources policies and programs by providing support and guidance to managers and employees in the areas of compensation, labour relations, employee relations, performance management, benefits, recruitment, training and the Human Resources Information System. The HR Generalist acts as a business partner to the organization in the areas of employee development and may assist in the preparation of materials for the collective bargaining process.

  • Familiarity with the use of data management

  • Advanced written, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to conduct research, compile reports and prioritize work
  • Demonstrated ability to support corporate vision and to integrate corporate values into daily routine
  • Intermediate MS Office skills
  • Experience with an integrated electronic HR/Payroll system and intermediate software skills in web-based internet/intranet
  • Intermediate consultative skills coupled with solid ability to develop working relationships at all levels within and outside the organization

 Knowledge/Education:

  • Post-secondary degree in Human Resources Management/Industrial Relations or equivalent education and experience
  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP)
  • Advanced understanding and working knowledge of relevant employment and workplace legislation
  • Advanced understanding of job evaluation systems
  • Basic knowledge of Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements

 Experience:    

  • 5-years progressive human resources experience, with a specialized focus on labour relations, performance management, and/or recruitment
  • Experience in delivering HR solutions through design and application of process, technology and using relevant HR metrics
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and with the interpretation and administration of collective agreements
  • Experience in applying job evaluation systems and pay equity maintenance
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license

 Major (Primary) Responsibilities:

  • Human Resource Business Partner: Provide consultation, coaching and support to business units with recruitment, performance management, employee development and employee relations. Engage in recruitment and selection activities in support of the organization. Conduct job evaluations and recommend appropriate levels of compensation.  Maintain employee information accurately while respecting confidentiality. Liaise with external groups including membership on committees. Prepare reports and analyze data to educate the organization on trends and provide supporting information for HR initiatives.  Support the identification of skill gaps and provide appropriate training. Develop, distribute and ensure consistent human resources messaging using all communication methods including presentations to stakeholders and/or external presentations.
  • Provision of Expert Advice:  Counsel and confer with the President & CEO and Senior Management on labour relations matters and HR policy issues that may have an impact on the organization.  Ensure HR strategy aligns with and supports the business strategy.
  • Programs/Processes: Investigate and recommend new/improved HR related programs and services. Lead the implementation of approved projects. Improve HR processes and communicate changes to all stakeholders.  Manage the HR information system through appropriate processes to maintain integrity of the data.
  • Budgeting: Develop Human Resource operating budget and ensure that the unit operates within the approved budget. 
  • Labour Relations: Advise management to ensure that the Collective Agreement is administered in a fair and reasonable manner, promoting a positive culture for union/management relations. Ensure labour relations matters are managed fairly, consistently and expediently.  Resolve grievances as they arise.  Ensure compliance with HR policies and legislative requirements.
  • Safety: Supports Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives by incorporating safe work practices into daily work routine.
