Meter Technician Apprentice

About the Role

We are looking for a dynamic individual with exceptional customer service and technical skills. Working in a non-routine and very complex environment, the Meter Technician Apprentice is accountable for the installation and maintenance of residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale metering. The incumbent will also be accountable for the provision of power call service and to provide Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) support.

Duties include:

  • Install, replace, verify, and maintain single and three phase power meters and metering equipment in compliance with Measurement Canada regulations
  • Maintain and support the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system including Smart Meter Radio Frequency (RF) communications
  • Install, replace, and maintain primary meter units
  • Install, replace, and maintain multi-residential meter systems
  • Complete service orders and required documentation, and input into the Customer Information System (CIS) system
  • Operate the meter test console
  • Respond to customer electrical power and billing concerns
  • Install and monitor power recording equipment and produce associated reports
  • Assist Distribution Operations department during power outages, transformer maintenance, and changes
  • Maintain, clean, and stock the meter shop, trucks, and equipment
  • Test and/or repair Hydro multi meters as required
  • Work in compliance with all health and safety and environmental legislation including, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Oakville Hydro’s Policies and Procedures
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Electrical or Electronic Technician Diploma
  • Previous Electrical Utility experience is an asset
  • G class license required with a clear driver abstract
  • Must be willing to complete 4-year Metering Apprenticeship program
  • Demonstrate quality work that is well planned and completed accurately
  • Ability to adapt to changing volumes and pace of work
  • Demonstrate proficiency in a Windows environment and associated software applications
  • Strong time management and organization skills to ensure that deadlines are met, and work is delivered
  • Able to perform essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Experience working with required hand tools
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent safety and attendance record utilizing a strong safety mindset
