Damage Prevention Technician (Utility Locator)

Have you seen a spraypainted line on the ground and wondered what it was?  It’s a utility locate.  The different colours define underground utilities such as gas lines, waterlines and more.  It’s a critical job that keeps people and communities safe.

About the Role

Damage Prevention Technicians (Utility Locator) locate underground utilities i.e., high-voltage electrical cables, water lines, sewer lines, steam lines, gas lines, telephone lines, and more, for a prescribed geography.  Using company provided equipment, the Damage Prevention Technician will locate, mark (with spray paint and flags) and record underground utilities.  

Other Duties include:

  • Employing a health and safety mindset with customers and communities
  • Consulting with contractors, developers, builders, regarding locations of underground utilities
  • Preparing reports and documentation verifying marked utilities
  • Safeguarding of company equipment and vehicle

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Have a valid ‘G’ class Driver’s License and clean three (3) year Driver’s Abstract as this position
  • The ability to physically walk in and out of ditches, on uneven surfaces, lifting and loading equipment up to 9kg (20 lbs) in and out of the vehicle several times per day, carry/swing 20lbs of equipment while walking
  • The ability to work in all types of weather
  • The ability to work weekends, on call and overtime as required
