JOURNEYPERSON POWERLINE TECHNICIAN

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. (“BHI”) is currently seeking a Journeyperson Powerline Technician. Reporting to the Supervisor, Powerline, this position will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and construction of overhead and underground distribution lines. The successful candidate will perform emergency call-out and on-call duties and work under emergency conditions, with the willingness and ability to respond and be on the work site within one hour of receiving the call. This is a full-time unionized position. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Construction, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system, including overhead and underground of various voltages (up to and including 27.6 kV)
  • Perform live line work on overhead and underground electrical distribution lines of up to 27.6 kV
  • Respond to regular emergency call-out and on-call duties and work under emergency conditions, with the willingness and ability to respond and be on the work site within one hour of receiving the call
  • Ensure ESA permits and locate requirements are in place before commencing work
  • Service and troubleshoot electrical-related issues efficiently
  • Ensure all work meets ESA and internal requirements to maintain compliance and safety standards
  • Complete work/service orders within the allotted time frames
  • Ensure all installation/service work is performed according to established quality standards
  • Report and communicate job progress and issues according to company procedures
  • Assist with work overflow as needed to support team objectives
  • Follow all company policies and procedures to maintain operational integrity
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and report all near-misses and incidents immediately to promote a safe working environment
  • Perform all work within health and safety regulations, company standards, industry standards, and applicable regulatory codes
  • All other duties as assigned 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Certified Journey Level Powerline Technician under the MEARIE Powerline Training program or equivalent, and must be licensed to work in Ontario
  • Successful completion of Secondary School Diploma – OSSD or recognized equivalent
  • Possession of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities Powerline Technician Certificate (or equivalent)
  • Full certification in the Ontario Utility Work Protection Code, or willing and able to acquire within six months and maintain
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid and clean abstract with a class “G” Ontario Driver's License, Class ‘AZ’ (or willing and able to obtain within six months)
  • Demonstrated work experience in the safe performance of all aspects of electrical overhead and underground distribution system work, up to and including 27.6kV 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Physical ability to perform essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Technical knowledge of electrical distribution systems and equipment
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical distribution systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills
  • Positive work ethic and attitude with a good attendance record
  • Knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Book 7 Traffic Manual, and Health and Safety protocols
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Commitment to fostering collaboration and maintaining a positive workplace culture
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR/AED
