Micro Grid Systems Integrator and Operator

PowerStream Inc. is the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company in Ontario, providing service to more than 355,000 customers residing or owning a business in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario. It is jointly owned by the Cities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan.

Purpose: PowerStream is leading the installation of Micro Grid energy generation and storage systems at commercial, industrial and residential locations. Under the direction of the Director of Energy Services this position is responsible for the design, integration and operation of the required Micro Grid Communication and Control Systems. This role is responsible for ensuring that Micro Grids meet or exceed customer service targets. The role requires a very independent person looking for a fast-moving, start-up atmosphere.

PowerStream is working to respond to and serve the increasingly distributed and interdirectional energy sector. PowerStream works closely with partner vendors and project management firms to integrate existing energy products into easy to adopt services, allowing customers to make new choices to meet their energy needs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead Micro Grid and Storage  communication and control systems for commercial, industrial and residential properties (2 kW systems up to 5 MW systems and larger)
• Operate and optimize Micro Grid SCADA; including integration of control systems for new generation, storage and load components.  Property Micro Grids integrate both heat and power systems (e.g. CHP, geothermal, district energy, electricity, etc.).
• Design, implement and operate communication and control systems for new Micro Grid and Storage projects.  Includes integration of performance optimizing software and systems (e.g. price optimizers that operate micro grid assets to minimize average price paid).
• Ensure operating Micro Grids meet or exceed customer service targets (e.g. average electrical and thermal pricing, power quality, up-time, etc.)
• Develop and ensure the necessary alarm systems are operating
• Track and report on Micro Grid and  Storage system performance; Develop and implement recommendations on existing and new system configuration and designs
• Work with PowerStream and external partners to integrate Micro Grid communication and control systems into distribution SCADAs, metering and billing, customer services and other systems.
• Role is primarily software focused but requires real expertise and knowledge of energy systems and hardware to ensure proper system design, implementation and operation
• Work closely with team in predicting and aligning system specifications with customer requirements
• Ensure that PowerStream operates within  the policies and procedures of the organization.
• Ensure that all system operations  activities comply with all relevant safety rules, market rules, legislation, and relevant codes (in coordination with the appropriate company staff)

Experience and Educational Requirements:

• College/University degree in a related subject; Certified P. Eng preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years experience required
• Knowledge of SCADA systems
• Knowledge of communications systems (serial, Ethernet) and standards including protocols such as Modbus, IEC61850, DNP3, etc.
• Knowledge of distribution systems and  technology
• Knowledge of heating systems and technology (gas, combined heat and power, geothermal, etc.) is a strong asset
• Strong strategic, analytical and communication skills

• Able to provide innovative solutions to complex issues in a timely manner
