Job Summary

As a Civil Design Technician, you will be part of an engineering team, tasked with the maintenance and expansion of civil and electrical projects. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension and/or repair of a variety of electrical and civil equipment; controlled, monitored and/or automated by complex circuity, electronics, and or advanced communication networks.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare, create, modify, or review civil and electrical design such as, Cable Chamber/Vault, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, highway crossing, train track crossing, bridge crossing, etc.
  • Proficient to complete drawing in accordance with Subsurface Utility Engineering Standards with Microstation
  • Review and calculate invert data for congested civil subsurface utility design to generate sufficient profile/cross section
  • Read, understand, and interpret various types of underground civil utility drawings
  • Perform initial Quality Control (QC) of field deliverables according to standards and best practices
  • Ability to communicate directly with field staff if there are any questions or clarifications required within the documents received from the field
  • Organize and review all field documents and files for completeness
  • Ensure that utility record drawings are collected, complete and reviewed thoroughly. This includes any drawings and plans provided by the client
  • Understand and correlate between utility records, construction plans, and field documents (sketches / notations / survey files) to document the presence of underground and/or aerial utilities
  • Work through and complete various types of deliverables and supporting documents, including but not limited to; Drawings, Reports, Traffic Control Plans (as per OTM Book 7), etc
  • Familiarity with Electrical Power Distribution design is an asset
  • Obtain all necessary construction permits during design stage
  • Prepare and/or review construction packages, including all required drawings, work instructions, planning documentation, operating systems and regulatory approvals, where required
  • Conduct routine field trips to verify or evaluate the condition/state of assets, to determine the feasibility of designs, to take detailed measurements, and take pictures
  • Assist project engineer in review of designs, plans, drawings, surveys, studies (load, etc.) and/or calculations
  • Support Professional Engineers with detailed technical studies and/or calculations; preparation of cost estimates; the creation of equipment specifications and installation standards; requests for quotation; evaluation of new equipment
  • Help coordinate construction projects - liaise, consult, and communicate with our customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Degree in Civil Engineering. CET designation is an asset
  • Demonstrated competence in computer drafting using Microstation is obligatory
  • Experience in design, and construction, within the utilities industry is an asset
  • Familiarity with Structural & Architectural concept is an asset
  • General knowledge of overhead and underground utility design
  • Ability to scale drawings & visualize 3D objects/cross-sections in 2D
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Complies with safety guidelines by wearing proper equipment, adopts efficient and safe work practices
  • Completes work in a timely and efficient manner, be able to work well independently with little supervision and attends work punctually
  • Completes assigned work while adapting to changing volumes and pace of work
  • Cooperative with supervisors and reports and interacts collaboratively and effectively with others
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license in the Province of Ontario is obligatory
