OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN

Canadian Niagara Power Inc. (CNP), located in beautiful Fort Erie, is looking for a proactive, safety-focused trouble-shooter with a positive attitude to join the Operations team. 

Under the general direction of the Technical Services Supervisor, the Operations Technician will perform routine substation maintenance, to troubleshoot and correct substation electrical problems and maintain the protection and control, along with communication systems of the company. 

What this role does:

  • Design, install, test, and maintain protection and control systems such as relays, breakers, controls, and accessories and communication systems such as the two-way radio system, communication networks, corporate telephone system, etc.
  • Install, maintain, and repair all components of SCADA and automation systems
  • Program, install, analyze, troubleshoot, and repair microprocessor-based relays and Intelligent Electronic Devices
  • Test transformers, cables, tools, equipment, rubber goods, and trucks
  • Install, maintain, and test substation and metering systems
  • Investigate, evaluate, specify, and procure equipment for application on transmission and distribution systems
  • Carry out power quality investigations and technical studies (including protection co-ordination analyses) and prepare reports
  • Comply and be familiar with all industry standards and work practices, operating rules, regulations, as well as all pertinent OHSA regulations.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior team members as required to maintain a safe and skilled crew
  • Once trained, occasionally perform duties in the metering and operations technician group, to fill vacancies as required
  • Manage projects and oversee contractors, and other duties as required 

What makes you a successful candidate?

  • Graduate of recognized three (3) year Electrical Engineering Technologist program
  • Registered (or qualified to register) as a Certified Engineering Technologist in the Province of Ontario
  • Minimum 2 years experience in SCADA, protection, control, communication, substation, and/or metering systems
  • Minimum 2 years as an Operations Technician and/or in a Control room is an asset
  • Excellent in computer applications, such as the Microsoft Office Suite and analysis applications
  • Thorough understanding of Utility Work Protection code, Electrical Utility Safety Rules, and applicable regulatory codes
  • Completed Substation Electrician and/or Electrical Operator courses with MEARIE is an asset
  • Live or be willing to relocate to the Niagara region for daily commute into the Fort Erie Service Centre
  • Ability to work extended hours when needed for emergencies, including storms
  • Good communication (verbal and written) skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, customers, and industry partners
  • Must have an excellent safety record, and commitment to ongoing high standards of safety
  • Must work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions from supervisor and peers
  • Thorough understanding of equipment, standards, and practices applicable
  • Ability to think critically and analytically with strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Unrelenting commitment and passion to safety, ethics, and continuous improvement
  • Possesses a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License
