Senior Manager, Planning and Design

Duties include:

  • Proactively manage an effective and highly motivated team of Engineering Technologists through coaching and providing development opportunities that builds skill and capability through innovative approaches that assist with learning
  • Provide technical advice on all aspects related to electrical distribution
  • Manage system planning and design of Oakville Hydro’s distribution system
  • Ensures the certification of all design standards and design plans meet applicable standards
  • Prepare budget proposals and cost estimates for capital projects and manage the contract preparation, administration, and project management
  • Manage material approval and specifications process (e.g., new materials, equipment etc.)
  • Approve the design of new hydro installations
  • Oversee the coordination, ownership, and approval of all drawings
  • Accountable for the coordination with outside agencies, and customers for various projects and initiatives
  • Manage the third-party attachment permitting process
  • Utilize a continuous improvement and innovation mindset to identify efficiencies, modernize and refine the distribution system and equipment. This includes diagnosing and troubleshooting system deficiencies
  • Take the initiative to stay informed with current technological changes through networking, attending industry events and seminars, and taking relevant in-person or online courses

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario
  • A minimum of 7-10 years Electrical Engineering experience in a distribution utility environment
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in distribution system planning and design
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven supervisory experience in a unionized environment
  • Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s License with an excellent driving record
  • Experience with new developments (residential and commercial) design and construction
  • Experience in industrial plants is an asset
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of utility construction practices and equipment
  • Strong project management skills
