DESIGN TECHNICIAN          

 

Erie Thames Powerlines is a local electric distribution company located in southwestern Ontario. Erie Thames is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a Design Technician.  Reporting to the Manager of Engineering & Technology, this position is responsible for assisting in the design of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. The incumbent is responsible for conducting field survey, line staking, obtaining approvals, responding to inquiries and corresponding with consultants, contractors, members of the public and staff. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prepares CAD design as per ESA 22/04 for new facilities, line relocations, rebuilds, extensions, conversions, new services and other modification to the existing electrical distribution system.
  • Reviews drawings submitted by consultants, contractors and agencies to ensure compliance with established projects based on field visits and reviews with other departments. Reviews and comments on consultant’ design submissions for the underground distribution system. Reviews and comments on submissions or approvals from external utilities and municipal departments and follows up as required. Responds to inquiries from consultants, contractors, customers and staff to either resolve or refer complaints.
  • Creates and prepares work orders, drawings, estimates and material requirements for overhead, underground and subdivision projects in accordance with established standards, practices and guidelines.
  • Co-ordinates jobs between construction, inspection and contractors to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Obtains approvals from consultants, builders, municipal, regional, provincial and federal agencies on capital and maintenance projects.
  • Consults and liaises with individuals, contractors, developers, company representatives, architects, Municipal and County representatives and follows up with correspondence as required.
  • Attends construction and site meetings.
  • Conducts field surveying and line staking when required and monitors progress on construction/maintenance projects as required.
  • Safety:  Supports the corporate Occupation Health & Safety initiatives by incorporating safe work practices into daily work routine. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practice using Erie Thames Powerlines procedures. 

Professional Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Completion of Electrical Engineering Technology/Technician program, with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in electrical distribution systems and eligibility for O.A.C.E.T.T. registration.
  • Civil Technologists with utility experience or recognized equivalent will also be considered.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of related engineering theory, principles and practices/techniques. 

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Ability to solve moderately complex problems.
  • Requires advanced skills in the use of computer software programs for CAD, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications.
  • Have a thorough understanding of GIS.
  • Applied knowledge of ESA 22/04.
  • Well-developed verbal & written communications skills.
  • A commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements.
  • A valid Class “G” driver’s license.
