The fifth largest City in Saskatchewan, Swift Current is located along the Trans Canada Highway between Medicine Hat and Regina. Home to the Cypress Health Regional Hospital and other care centres, Swift Current is a safe community housing two RCMP Detachments within the City, one for urban and one for rural surrounding communities. Swift Current is one of only two Cities in Saskatchewan that own their own growing Electrical Distribution Utility.

Due to a retirement, we are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual for the position of Director of Light & Power.

Swift Current Light & Power provides electrical services within the Swift Current boundary that provides power to 9,000 Swift Current residents as well as over 3,700 streetlights and thirteen (13) traffic control lights throughout the community.

We are looking for a leader, a highly skilled and experienced individual that will be responsible for overseeing and managing the overall operations of our Light and Power division.

They would manage a team of thirteen (13) to fifteen (15) employees that can build, maintain, and repair the underground and overhead electrical distribution and transmission lines that provide electricity to Swift Current homes and businesses. The staff members of this Utility belong to the IBEW Local 2067.

This could be an opportunity to join the City Senior Administration Team as a Senior Manager. This would allow you to participate as a leader positively influencing the direction of the organization. This team is responsible for making important decisions that can shape the municipality. Working alongside other senior leaders provides opportunity for personal and professional growth.

Reporting to the Chief Administration officer (CAO), the Director of Light and Power is responsible to direct, control and administer the operation of the City’s Electric Utility. They must meet the City’s Corporate Objectives by:

  • Supporting the Sr. Management Team providing, accurate information to Council
  • Aiding the development and implementation of initiatives, policies, and procedures
  • Enabling the City to meet its corporate financial goals and objectives.
  • Providing plans, organizing, and managing all aspects of the Utility
  • Budgeting, rate setting, H/R staff selection and training along with dealing with the public. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Business Administration, or a combination of practical experience as a Powerline Technician, power systems or a related field
  • At least ten (10) years of industry experience in distribution electric utility operations with a minimum of five (5) years in a managerial or leadership role with demonstrated skills as follows: 
      • Strategic Planning
      • Human Resources and Labour relations
      • Project Management, Decision Making,
      • Fiscal Management
      • Organizational Management
      • Problem Solving
      • Public and Media Relations
