Position Purpose:

We are seeking an Apprentice, Powerline Technician to work within the Operations department. This position will report to the Supervisor, Lines and hours of work will be as per the Collective Agreement. This position will be assigned to various crews through the orientation/apprenticeship period and, with training, will be expected to work on and operate high voltage power distribution equipment (up to 44kV).

Responsibilities:

Learn the skills and techniques to construct, maintain and operate the electrical distribution system including:

  • Accept direction and learn from Supervisor, Lead Hand and Journeyperson
  • Perform duties as described in the Journeyperson job description under close direction of Journeyperson
  • Tasks assigned will become progressively greater with experience
  • Successfully complete each level of the MEARIE training program for their respective trade
  • Become proficient with the operation of the tools, equipment of vehicles associated with the trade
  • Participate in emergency response and on call when deemed qualified
  • Responsible for maintaining personal Log Book, and other documents related to apprenticeship program
  • Successfully advance to the next level when you have achieved all of the required hours for the level, successfully completed the associated level at Line School, and demonstrate your abilities as determined by management to be consistent with the level and complete all apprenticeship requirements within a four year period.
  • Responsible for a working knowledge and understanding of and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies and procedures and safe work practices that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using Alectra procedures.  

Education and Specialized Knowledge:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Journeyman Powerline Technician certificate - MEARIE or completed Level 2 Powerline Technician Apprentice training – Mearie or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s licence. Applicant must also be prepared to obtain Class ‘AZ’ licence within one year and maintain it
  • Powerline Technician diploma, Electrical Technician/Technologist certificate or practical electrical experience would be a definite asset.
  • Ability to work with confidence in both aloft and within confined spaces.
  • High regard for personal and public safety in a team setting.
  • Ability to perform essential duties of the position including regular standby duties and the response to emergency call-outs within sixty minutes.

  • Physically fit to perform position responsibilities and ability to work in adverse weather condition
  • Demonstrated ability to work at heights (Apprentice Powerline Technician only)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with hand tools
  • Strong understanding of mechanics
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to solve moderately complex problems
  • Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate laptop computers and computer based tools and technology
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude and strong customer service
