Distribution Engineer

Reports to the Supervisor Planning and Standards and will play a key role in the day-to-day operations, projects and initiatives that will support Elexicon’s vision of empowering the communities we serve and help customers seize opportunities to ignite a better future. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Perform load forecasts based on historical data and system growth.
  • Review and analyze system loading and operating conditions.
  • Prepare routine and special load studies, plan for system enhancement or development requirements to reflect main feeder, substation, and supply point adequacy.
  • Maintain accurate records of historic outage data and information and prepare reliability reports by analyzing the data to improve distribution system reliability.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records of distribution system model data and creating equipment database to perform various engineering calculations using engineering analysis software.
  • Responsible for performing protection and coordination studies, load flow analysis, short circuit analysis and system optimization.
  • Perform power quality study of distribution system and address customer concerns regarding power quality.
  • Assist in the investigation and follow-up of equipment failure and reliability data.
  • Review and approve hydro distribution reference documents for construction purposes.
  • Approve major equipment, materials and drawings to be used in Elexicon Energy’s distribution system for construction purposes based on type test reports, and technical standards.
  • Oversee internal Standards Committees technically and administratively with their mandate and chair these committees as required.
  • Perform introduction, review, and approval of new equipment.
  • Review and approval of customer equipment to be connected to Elexicon distribution system.
  • Analyze trouble report data.
  • Ensure compliance with CSA, ESA, and Ontario Electrical Distribution Safety Regulation 22/04.
  • Analyze and compare solutions for system expansions and reinforcements and put forward a recommended solution.
  • Participate in a continuous learning manner with respect to new and emerging electric distribution system grid technologies with positive operation impacts, including all technologies associated with the smart grid.
  • Review, analyze and make recommendations with respect to internal and external requests for the connection of distributed generation assets to the company’s electric distribution system.
  • Assist with the interconnection of distributed generation projects as required.
  • Complete detailed Customer Impact Assessment studies with respect to distributed generation assets within prescribed timing.
  • Assist in the programming of automated devices, preparing and verifying digital relay logic, simulation of the system models for new projects, and for the testing, verification, and commissioning of the automated equipment.
  • Responsible for diagnosing and assessing information from automation devices in order to determine the root cause of distribution system faults and abnormalities.
  • Assist with various administrative responsibilities such as compliance reporting of the Ontario Energy Board, input into regulatory filings, maintenance of asset data, performance indicators, etc.
  • Be familiar with CEA, CSA, IHSA, ESA, IEEE, NETA and any standard or guideline Elexicon may consider relevant to the work being performed.
  • Prepare presentations and communicate information to company staff at training sessions and safety meetings.
  • Review and approve policies and procedures for Engineering and Planning.
  • Other duties as required may be considered part of these responsibilities. 

KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Excellent communication skills with a strong commitment to providing customer service.
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical power basics and relevant Codes/Standards.
  • Knowledgeable in Ontario Energy Board maintenance requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, etc.) and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) systems.
  • Ability to read technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of GIS systems.
  • Knowledge of utility-related construction practices.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Working knowledge of System analysis tools (e.g. CYME, DESS etc.).
  • Experience with Transmission connected stations would be beneficial. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

  • Completion of a post-secondary university degree in Electrical Engineering or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • A licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or working towards a license.
  • 5 to 7 years relevant work experience.
  • A valid driver’s license.
