TECHNICAL SERVICES TECHNICIAN

Oshawa Power maintains 1000 km of overhead and underground distribution lines within a 150 km2 service territory, operated at 44 and 13.8 kV, supplied by 9 distribution and 3 transmission substations. Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Services, the Technical Services Technician is responsible for the planning, designing and project management of distribution system enhancements, expansions and connections in accordance with established standards, codes, regulations, municipal by-laws and other applicable legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and prepare the design of electrical distribution system expansions, enhancements and connections, in accordance with all established standards, regulations and municipal by-laws;
  • Prepare and distribute cost estimates, service confirmations, drawings, material lists and work order packages to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Communicate and co-ordinate project details with internal staff, municipal authorities, government agencies, consultants, contractors, developers and customers;
  • Attend construction meetings and coordinate work between construction, customers, developers and contractors to ensure timely, efficient, and cost-effective completion of projects;
  • Maintain accurate technical and as constructed records and update all drawings and corporate databases as required.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma from a recognized institution as an Engineering Technician or Technologist and have (or be able to obtain) a C.Tech. or CET designation recognized by the Ontario Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT);
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience working in an electrical utility engineering and distribution system design environment;
  • Possess knowledge of electrical fundamentals, utility infrastructure, operations, maintenance and design;
  • Experience and knowledge in communications/fibre infrastructure and design would be considered an asset;
  • Good understanding of the utility regulatory environment;
  • Commitment to safety, customer service, teamwork, respect in the workplace and continued improvement of processes and procedures;
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in various software applications, such as MS Office, AutoCAD, GIS, QUADRA and SpidaCalc;
  • Working knowledge of USF Standards, Electrical Safety Code, Distribution System Code, Ontario Regulation 22/04 and applicable CSA standards;
  • Must be familiar with IHSA safety rules and regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act and ESA rules and regulations;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines while working in a team environment;
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver license with a driving record in good standing.
