DIRECTOR, ENGINEERING SERVICES

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. (“BHI”) is currently seeking a Director of Engineering Services.  Reporting to the Vice-President of Engineering Services & Network Operations, this position is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Engineering department.  This position provides assistance and leadership aimed at helping Burlington Hydro achieve its organizational objectives. This individual ensures that the Engineering department and Burlington Hydro comply with all applicable federal and provincial legislation. This position will oversee the full range of Engineering portfolios, including distribution system protection and control schemes, short and long-term system planning, and continued enhancements to SCADA capabilities conducive to a smart grid. Oversight of new capital projects associated with infrastructure needs and the maintenance of the distribution system are designed in accordance with stringent safety and design standards, ensuring long-term plans and expenditures are appropriate. This is an on-site position.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct and plan activities of the Engineering department to ensure that additions to the distribution system are designed safely and efficiently
  • Develop and maintain design standards and specifications (in accordance with industry standards, including the Electrical Safety Authority regulations) that, in turn, guide the construction practices of the utility
  • Direct, develop, and prepare capital works programs & budgets, operating budgets, and compilation of an accurate records / GIS system along with customer/external agency liaison are also major components of this position
  • Ensure projects have been constructed/completed in the field as designed prior to accepting them into the distribution system
  • Direct new capital projects associated with growth of the distribution system, ensuring design is in accordance with current industry-recognized best practices and long-term plans and expenditures are appropriate to accommodate future growth
  • Oversight of the distribution system protection and control schemes, short and long-term system planning, and continued enhancements to SCADA capabilities that are conducive to a smart grid
  • Oversee the preparation and updating of all records, AM-FM (GIS), and correspondence
  • Investigate partnership opportunities to streamline and reduce costs
  • Oversee activities involving responses to customers, contractors, and various authorities pertaining to safe working procedures in the vicinity of hydro infrastructure
  • Formulation, project management, and implementation of capital and departmental budgets
  • Direct team performance to ensure the company’s policies/procedures are followed according to established guidelines
  • Develop team and individual employee skills and capabilities, motivate employees, and provide feedback on day-to-day performance to ensure operational excellence
  • All other duties as assigned

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Science (or equivalent)
  • 5 + years of engineering leadership experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Excellent management, leadership, mathematical, scientific, problem-solving and planning skills
  • Excellent influencing, presentation, negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines
  • Excellent analytical skills supported by experience with interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, and regulations and familiarity with hydro operations, equipment usage, design, and installation
  • Application of engineering design principles and understanding of construction practices, high-voltage systems, electrical distribution, metering, and equipment specifications. Knowledge of AM/FM computer-aided drafting
  • Knowledge of applicable ordinances and policies governing BHI’s engineering practices and procedures
