Power Distribution Engineer

This pivotal role in the Engineering and Continuous Improvement department will have direct involvement in a wide area of initiatives including distribution infrastructure projects, embedded generation, electrification, continuous improvement, and grid modernization initiatives. The position responsibilities are included below: 

Major Duties & Responsibilities: 

Distribution System (70%) 

  • Provide technical guidance to engineering design technologists, surveyors, and other team members with design of overhead, underground, joint use, and other distribution projects.
  • Prepare, review, and approve plans, drawings, specifications, and standards for electrical distribution construction work in accordance with the applicable industry standards.
  • Conduct engineering analysis of the electrical distribution system using software packages like PLS-CADD, SPIDACalc and Synergi Electric Engineering Software.
  • Responsible for managing Engineering Capital projects to ensure they are completed      on-schedule, on-budget and within scope.
  • Manage customer expectations, resolve customer concerns or issues, and provide support to department supervisors in meeting project timelines.
  • Prepare technical specifications, cost estimates using QUADRA software, tender documents, and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Support GBE’s Annual Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) compliance requirements, due diligence inspections, and respond to regulatory reporting matters.
  • This position is instrumental in the harmonization of engineering standards across our service territories. This effort supports our long-term goals of enhancing system performance, facilitating regulatory compliance, and promoting sustainable growth. 

Embedded Generation (20%): 

  • Serve as the technical lead for interconnecting embedded energy generation projects including solar, wind, battery, and other sources. This will involve reviewing connection applications, single line diagrams, protection philosophy documents, and reviewing interconnection studies to ensure no adverse impact of the DER assets to the distribution grid.
  • Support project implementation activities involving tele-communication and tele-protection equipment by working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Investigate new technologies and develop methodologies to position GBE to be a leader in the emerging DER and electrification space. 

Continuous Improvement (10%): 

  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives by evaluating and enhancing engineering tools, processes, and workflows.
  • This involves identifying inefficiencies, proposing solutions to improve customer experience, and aligning efforts with our strategic pillars such as operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • The role requires a proactive approach to innovation, aiming to set new industry standards for efficiency and service quality.
  • Act as team lead if supervisor(s) is unavailable.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Eng. designation is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and analytical skills, with the ability to work with various work groups.
  • Ability to undertake in-depth technical studies with guidance and subject matter expert support.
  • Proficient with the use of AutoCAD software.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license with insurable driving record.
